    from the BBC:

    Colchester want to keep Chilvers
Colchester have played down speculation surrounding defender Liam Chilvers.
Barnsley boss had Andy Ritchie enquired about the possibilities of a move for the 23-year-old.

But Colchester chief executive Marie Partner told the club's website: "I would think that this has purely been a discussion between the two managers.

"Barnsley's interest did not progress to a stage where there was an offer in writing or anything to that effect. He remains very much a Colchester player."

pushed the boat out there then.

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

    So basically

we said "is he for sale?"

    they said "no"

    and that was it.

Why not (if we can afford it and if we were targetting LC we must be expecting to pay SUMMAT...ergo we have summat) bang an offer in and see what they do? Might get the player interested and if taht happens..it would then be down to us...

    RE: So basically

The club have had months and months and months if they really wanted to sign a centre back,Martin Mcintosh was available but no,in all honesty this could well be the difference between a very good season and another mediocre one and many genuine fans ARE beginning to get fed up of spending a lot of money watching very average performances.

    My sentiments are these:

we are looking at a season where the fans have very little to hope for other than the occasional good win/performance since the club is still bleating on about how dire the financial situation is, crowds are dwindling and interest is reaching a 10 year low. We are not having a realistic go at promotion, because we cant afford to. but be eternally grateful that at least we have a club to support.

call me a lesser fan, but I will be one of those who stays away cos blindly turning up week after week in the remote hope that we might put a couple of wins back to back doesnt fit my karma I'm afraid. before commenting on my position, bear in mind when the club asked for more money for signings, I was one of the first to put me hand in me pocket.

lets get real. things aint gonna get better whilst we're cutting our cloth, but thats the main, nay only focus. so be it.

    Lets get real

when Ritchie states "these are the quality of players we've been looking at this week", compare that with the ones we actually sign. we were never realistic about Chilvers, he's under contract and would have cost more than we are prepared to pay. Marc Richards is where we are at. unattached, 4 month deal to prove his fitness. piss poor.
