RE: SuperTyke That's a very personal question to ask. All political parties are disagreeable to me in one way or another. I shall keep you guessing but you would love me to say yes wouldn't you??
ahh either. to be honest even if it was true it's a bit rich to complain about it being banned since most people fail to celebrate its true meaning and instead get pissed, fall out of pubs and buy cheap plastic tat that that ends up broken or thrown in the back of a cupboard about one week after use. To quote Dylan, So why fuss about changing the name eh?
RE: except for one slight problem kanekat You made a mistake there, they are calling them the Winter Light Festival. It's my OPINION that this decision will have been made by a loony on the left.
Who says that the christmas lights are being called WinterLight? A newspaper? Because Oxford Inspires who are the people you're talking about, the people that are running WinterLight seem to disagree with you. They seem to be under the impression that WinterLight is a name to cover all of their events throughout Winter, not as a name to replace Christmas. here is what 'winterlight' refers to according to those organising it for the second year running (yes it was named the same last year as well) So WinterLight actually is just a name to encompass all of the events that are taking place throughout winter, it is called winterlight because most of the events are based around fire and/or light so the name makes sense (an example of this is the music concerts set to candelight that are taking place in winter). One of the main parts of this winter period of events is the christmas lights which are called funnily enough christmas lights, not winterlights. The name winterlights does not refer to the brightly coloured bulbs hanging up around oxford. These are called christmas lights and are referred to as christmas lights many times by both oxford council and oxford inspires. WinterLights refers to a whole season of events and in particular one specific set of events on the 28th november which they describe as this "An evening feast of light, street performance, art, music, science, opera in everyone’s favourite museums, art galleries, theatres and on the streets. Follow the culture trail, stopping off to see late-night exhibitions and one-off shows at each location. Eight museums, galleries and theatres in the city will host live music and themed events whilst offering refreshment and entertainment to visitors into the night from 6pm to 10.30pm." So we have now established that WinterLight event itself is a night of light and activities including a traditional oxford culture trail and british museums. but maybe this is just a sneaky way to try to avoid saying that they have banned christmas, lets take a look at the WinterLights brochure then that they made. The front cover features a large christmas tree, it is designed like a christmas advent calender and 14 of the events that are included in winterlights have the word Christmas in them, the rest are none christmas events that happen to be in winter time. The word christmas is used in their brochure 28 times. Some of the events featured are christmas lights, christmas carol concerts, a christmas tree, christmas markets as well as a christmas nativity. But still maybe they werent emphasising christmas enough? No that isn't the case either, their original press release (which inspired the guardians story) used the word christmas in its very first sentance. In fact the phrase 'christmas lights' was the 14th and 15th words used. Would you agree, after reading that, that the original story by the guardian was a bit misleading?
Because it sells papers acky There has been no name change anyway, it is yet another false newspaper story like the ones we have seen many times. "A dazzling calendar of events for the festive season is taking shape highlighting Christmas light switch-ons, pantomimes and special outdoor events in towns all across the county including Oxford’s WinterLight on Friday 28 November."
RE: Who says that the christmas lights are being called WinterLight? Sorry this is getting a little tiresome now, don't mean to be rude but can't even be arsed to read all of that post. We will never agree on issues like this, we have had several lengthy exchanges on the subject before and never come to an agreement. Let's talk about something nice Do you have any pets?!! What's your favourite colour? Do you agree with me that Foster should be the new captain?
Welcome to our house of fun in the middle of our street Oh what fun we had. Didn't really turn out bad though.
which true meaning is that then the pagan yule celebration of the winter solstice and suchlike or the transposed birthdate of a psuedo historical figure
Give it a quick read or at least skim read it for the main points because it's trying to explain why the guardian was wrong, not how you were. Ive always agreed with your point anyway that our traditions should be kept (well most of them), I just tend to find that most of these newspaper stories are nothing but a pack of lies or a reporter deliberatly attempting to iincite people by publishing half a story or taking a quote out of context just to sell papers as this one has proven to be. If you read my previous post you'll see what I mean about how the newspaper story and the truth are miles apart. As for your other points, no I don't have any pets, wouldn't mind some though, my favourite colours are red (barnsley) and yellow a it's nice and bright and I think foster should have been captain from the moment howard told the club he didnt want to stay last season (apparently)
I will have the courtesy to read your post, but after the soaps!! As it's one that needs to be concentrated on not just glanced over like some. Barnsleys RSPCA and Cats Protection are bursting at the seams due to alot of pets been dumped due the credit cruch, maybe just an excuse for some to get rid. So if you are thinking of getting a pet now is the time as the pet societies need help the most. I'm dropping some cat food off for them at the weekend as they're barely managing to survive - note for other BBSers if you want to help
How? Where? Please can you put some details on here. You never know, some of us may want to contribute.
Good idea They had collection points in Morrisons and Asda where you could put tins in. Or if you want to drop food off ring rspca 01226 767737 or cats protection 01226 712157 they are desperate.
At work, instead of Xmas cards ... we agree to make donations to RSPCA in the form of tins of food, instead of sending each other Christmas cards... What's the point of sending cards to folks you see 5 days a week? (and we do Secret Santa anyway)!
Oxford is having a two-month festival this winter. It's called the Winter Light Festival. Christmas, which lasts a couple of days, will still be celebrated in the traditional pagan fashion with a tree, mistletoe, some lights, and serious revelry. Where's the story?
thanks for the info about the pets, I dont really have the time to have a pet (no point having one if you cant give it proper care) but i'm sure a donation of some kind can make its way to them
