Cryptic Whitey seems to believe otherwise, but the real answer will never be known. My original point was in reply to one glorifying Robins record of blooding and playing youth compared to that of Danny Wilson, so this is all a bit of a side issue anyway. Will you stop calling Keith Hill "The Berk" if he takes Rochdale up again this season, or is it really a term of affection.
I will reluctantly have to give credit where it's due. Absolutely no affection whatsoever on my part though.
To be fair, he'd have been a bit of a numpty had he not picked him.
I think that I detect a sneeking admiration in your comment. They do say there is very little difference between love and hate though, don't they.
He invested heavily in Shackell, a player who looked a step ahead of the rest of our squad at that time and who went on to command a much bigger fee when we sold him. Also a player of the calibre we could only usually attract on loan, which is something people grumble about. Hammill was sold because of a clause in his contract, but it was Robins who got him playing so well in the first place. Had we of backed Robins like he'd wanted I genuinely believe we'd have been a top half Championship side, whether it was possible to give him what he wanted I dont know but it's been downhill (other than half a season under Hill) ever since and his organised, disciplined and determined approach is exactly what this side is calling out for. As for having achieved nothing, what exactly had Danny Wilson done in 15 years that warranted him being given a Championship managers position? Absolutely **** all, he was given it in the hope of connecting with the fans. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Essentially, that is the problem with Robins. He was always likely to come back wanting more. The board thought that they were getting a manager who would manage with less and what they got was one who wanted more. He needs an owner with deep pockets, but if the owners pockets are as deep as Robins wants, why not go for a manager of prove ability, rather than one who has proven only that he can spend money, and little else.
Yet when he was here, we were maybe not quit fulfilling play off pushes but were quite unfortunate not to break into the top 6 at certain points. We've come nowhere close to that in the past 15 years (in the championship) other than when he was here and with a little extra funding maybe we could have sustained a push or at least a top 10 finish. If the board had backed robins we would have most likely got promoted, he asked for 3 players that much i can tell you...the board were more worried about staying in the division than advancement. They refused him funds and the after christmas slump kicked in i know the above to be true has at the time i was trying to do some business from portugal with Mark Robins at the time.
Stagnation. Yes. Relegation. Yes Promotion. Not in a million years. The post Christmas slump has happened at every club he's ever managed.
Stagnation and relegation? Based on what? He was the only manager during our sentence in the championship that actually looked like steadily progressing us. Am I right in thinking he's never been relegated? So going on the same basis as you, looking at what he's done at every club, Relegation certainly wasnt on the cards. Weren't we 4th under Davey in October one year, pushing for the play-offs under Hill in January 2012, and ended up with only one less point under Flicker than Robins in his best season?
Based on what I saw with my eyes. Not much success either. Average stagnating almost a perfect description. Didn't Flitcroft get one point less in his first season than MR in his best? I saw absolutely no sign of progression. I didn't particularly want him to leave he had done ok but if he had stayed I would have broken 30 odd years of going to Oakwell given the dull nature of the way we played. His last season ended years of supporting for 5 of my mates they just couldn't handle the beigeness. I had far better times as a Barnsley fan under Davey for all his faults.
Didn't get Rotherham up. Their form dropped off in both seasons. Led us to 18th and 17th I think. Initially had success at Coventry, but they were mid table and had just lost 1-0 at home to Yeovil when he jumped ship, days after telling the Coventry fans the club was "in my blood". Took over at Huddersfield, lost his first two games, 4-1 and 6-1 but steadied the ship somewhat and they scraped to safety along with us. Last season guided them up a couple of places to 17th after spending £2,500,000 on players. Walked out after the opening day defeat (4-0) to Bournemouth, it's commonly accepted that he'd told Hoyle he couldn't take the club on any further and they parted company. Pitched up at Scunny a couple of weeks after Swan outlined his heavily financed intentions there.. I'm not seeing a good manager myself. I'd rate Keith Hill as far better.
R old boy chalked on it during that era. He came back for two games when Hill took over. Unfortunately, we lost both (Blackpool and Ipswich). He's not been back since. He'd been a season ticket holder for 20 years plus before then. Just got bored, he said. He now watches Rec these days. It helps that it's 100 yards from his house I think.
I dont claim the football was great but it certainly wasnt as bad as is being made out. We were financially out of our depth and as is the case with some PL managers, he thought being organised was the priority to survive and prosper. As for Flitcroft getting one less point in his first season, that was a backs against the wall, seige, nothing to lose mentality and as soon as it came to a new season, starting afresh on the same points as everyone else, he got found out. Their wasnt the same desire or motivation. The two are uncomparable. Also, someone mentioned he failed to get Rotherham promoted. The same way Wilson did at Bristol City and Sheffield United? Both with very big budgets at the time, particularly Sheff Utd. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
