A bloke i no, it was his sons presentation evening last week, and Heckingbottom was giving medals out, and he wo talking to Hecky about Mattis, and Hecky said he looks well out of place in training, and he feels sorry for him!
So, who the hell was responsible for bringing him in? These sort of comments make yer blood boil, nowt wrong with who has posted the gossip but the moan is with the club.
On whose authority and recommendation was he signed and then so significantly dropped at £75,000?
Surely lessons will be learned

RE: So, who the hell was responsible for bringing him in? It really makes my blood boil this constant witch hunt regarding Mattis. For god's sake how may times has he played for us? 3 times I think. It's bleeding obvious he has looked very avaergae in these 3 games - just as it's blatantly obvious the difference in standard between league 2 and Championship is a very big gap to bridge. I have watched football for over 30 years - which is considerably longer than many who post on here I suspect - and the number of times I have seen payers start off with a club and look no great shakes - but then turn out to be very good players. There was once a rather small, over weight Glaswegian - with alleged drink problems - that Barnsley got on the cheap from Scotland. Believe me, he was very lazy, mediocre - and in footballing terms a lightweight non entity in his first dozen games or so. Eventually, when he had settled into the club, the area, the country - and was played in his more natural position - he became a 20 goal a season man for Barnsley. His name? Ronnie Glavin. Don’t get me wrong - I doubt if Mattis will become a Glavin. But let's lay off the lad and judge him say after a season? He might just prove you wrong......and certain people will end up eating another potion of Davey humble pie - again! If you started a new job and took a while to settle in would you expect constant barracking and criticism from your colleagues and employer? Obviously not. Encouragement and training would bring you up to scratch. Maybe this might just work for Mattis. Remember when we signed Hristov. That lazy bugger spent virtually the whole of the Prem season sauntering around the pitch, way off the pace and passion of English football. Yet somehow, as our record signing and an international import at that, we seemed much more ready to give him the benefit of the doubt. Can we not do the same for Mattis until he has a few more games under his belt?
Been watching football 30 years? You don't know much do you? Ronnie Glavin had played for Scotland before he came to Barnsley and had played at the highest level with Celtic. He wasnt fit when he arrived but not out of his depth. I have been watching football 40 years.
Agree totally to that Disco I too remember Glavin starting at the club - he was terrible But for the life of me I cant see why people on here are having a go at Mattis - I suppose its the same old story - lets play queenie When I've seen Mattis he looks full of potential Good engine - box to box - tall and strong - tackles and likes to have a go at goal I think we have a good player here (given a chance)
RE: Been watching football 30 years? I disagree. Glavin's career was heading for the knackers yard when he joined us. He seemingly had had problems with the bottle and it was believed he had spent time in prison as a result. As regards been an International you need to go and check the record books - as far as I am aware he played no more than an handful of full internationals for Scotland and never appeared in a World Cup for them - for god sake Carlton Palmer played for England which proves being an international can mean very little. Admittedly, he did play for Celtic- and finshed their top scorer at least one season - however, I'm sure you don't need me to point out that playing for Celtic in what is effectively a 2 club dominated country - hardly compares to the English game. ......................surely if he wasn't fit then that in itself makes him out of his depth....................? If he was so good then why did Celtic let him go for £40K?? - In my opinion, it's back to all the baggage he had at the time and it was a very high risk stratergy by Clarke signing him. Benefit of hindsight tells us it paid off - which it did - but let's not conveniently forget how mediocre he was at first - and I do remember some fans getting on his back 'Mattis' style. My overall point however is not to debate Ronnie Glavin - It's just that it seems to have become fashionable to critcise Mattis when the lad hasn't played sufficient games for us to make an informed judgement either way.
RE: Been watching football 30 years? 'EMLEY AFC -Pen pictures by GRAHAME ROWLEY, joint editor of THE ROBINS' REVIEW and reproduced here with his kind permission Ronnie Glavin: Had an illustrious professional career, winning the Scottish League Cup with Partick Thistle, against all the odds against Celtic in 1971-72, then Championships and the Scottish FA Cup with Celtic, before moving to Barnsley, and becoming a hero to the locals there. He also won an International Cap for Scotland. ' ...........................hardly a Gary Linekar or Bobby Charlton when it came to winning caps me thinks.
Hecky has 'looked well out of place on the pitch' - never mind in training - so perhaps a little hypocritical IF he really did say this.
King Ronnie..... Got to agree with Disco here..... I don't know if Glavin did time, but rumour has it that he had move sharpish so as to avoid charges in relation to arson on a property (sports shop) with a failing business. When Ronnie first turned out for us he was somewhat cumbersome, but that could be down to the 'settlement period' (ahem). He did bloody wonderful after those early games though - myself personally, feels like the Millwall home game was the turning point (?). What a pleasure i've had watching the man. With regards his international career i don't think he played that many games but for some reason i seem to think he scored in s friendly against Sweden???
2 possible explanations 1. he's black and obviously looks different to the rest of the barnsley honkies 2. heckingbottom is ***** and looks out of place himself. he thinks Mattis is outof place cos he's better than him
