I don’t understand what direct competition you want men and women in?

You could say the same for the England women. Would you expect the same for them?

    I don't!
That's the whole basis of my argument, it wouldn't be a fair competition and that's why men should get better rewards as they work to a far higher standard.
If women want equal pay then throw all the prize money in one pot and play against each other for it.
I'm not saying there is no place for women's sport, far from it and as a club we actively encourage it, its not though at the same standard as men's and that is fact.
If you employed a bricklayer to build you a wall but instead he sent a labourer who built it but not to the required standard?

Megan is right to do what she believes is right.
She should get the pay/wages she merits. The point I am making is that what Megan and other women footballers should get paid shouldn't be determined by what men get.
We never hear of sportsmen's pay being decided by comparing it to what sportswomen earn/get paid.
It may well be that in some sports women should be paid in excess of men!

The reason football is my favourite sport (apart from the history of it) is because it can encompass different body types, heights, skill levels, weight , pace, speed etc etc. I hate things like American football and basketball because you have to be a giant to play them.

If women's football hadn't been curtailed after the war massive crowds for the sport may well have been the norm.

What I don’t get is the argument that they’ve won more medals so deserve equal pay.

If it had anything to do with the tournaments won, they’d be being paid a hell of a lot more than the men surely? Celtic have won nine of the last ten league championships they’ve played in, Man Utd very little in the last few years, but I bet the Celtic average wage isn’t 25% of Man Utd’s. Sport wages are dictated by the money generated, not what you win.

This is an argument on the international stage though, of course. In the USA, pretty uniquely, the women’s team generate about as much interest and probably as much or more revenue - within the USA. But they probably still don’t generate the same amount of overall revenue, the men’s team play in men’s tournaments and are funded by the administrators of the men’s game, and receive funding for doing so from them. It is much more than the women’s game.

The us men’s team don’t win the same number of tournaments of course - but they receive much, much more for merely taking part in the World Cup and CONCACAF gold cup than the women do for winning those tournaments.

So if Rapinoe can show that the women’s team bring in more money than the men’s, then they should be paid more. If it’s the same, pay them the same. I’m sure Steph Houghton would like to be paid the same as John Stones for both city and England. But she isn’t and there are clear reasons for that.

Female fashion models are paid much more handsomely than male. The top ‘supermodels’ earn tens of millions a year, the highest paid male perhaps just over £1million and there aren’t many earning anything close to that. The interest and money generated by female fashion is much higher than for males, and so this stands to reason and in my view is justified.

I am 100% behind equality and balanced and fair recompense. Any person should earn the same as another who is adding the same value to their employer and in a comparable role. This wouldnt do that though.

In the case of Wimbledon and other major tennis tournaments it is hard to quantify - as tv rights and sponsorship are arranged en masse - but it is hard to argue that there is more interest in the women’s game than the men’s, and the women have to win fewer sets to win and so have much lower court time, the tv time is filled with way more male match time too - so in my view they receive more than the men, comparing like for like. Many don’t agree.

Rapinoe also talks about making just as much effort and training just as hard - I’m pretty sure Accrington Stanley train just as hard as Barcelona, but I’m not convinced Dion Charles reckons he should be on Messi’s wages. Similarly I’m sure I work just as hard in my role as the company’s MD does on a daily basis. More maybe. I’m not dragging in what he is though. Someone buzzing around an Amazon warehouse picking orders, on minimum wage or just over, probably goes home a lot more worn out than Jeff Bezos does every night. The amount of effort is about as relevant as the number of medals won.

If she stopped comparing apples with oranges - and maybe said she didn’t feel the us women’s team were being paid fairly when looking at the interest and revenue generated by them for the US federation - I think she’d gain more traction. Assuming that is the case.

The other thing in football, both men and women's, is that you don't get equal pay in the same team. Rapinoe is probably one of the highest paid female footballers in the game.

I knew this board was leftist but actually seeing someone say that mens soccer should subsidize womens soccer is just.. I have no words.

The only people Megan Rapinoe should be directing her anger & ingratitude toward are all the consumers out there who just aren’t interested in watching women’s soccer. But yes she is an extremely oppressed millionaire.

How can she ask for equal pay without comparing her pay to the male pay?

I would imagine more female gymnasts can earn a living from being one than men do but if you had 2 gold medalists, I’d be confident the male would earn more from his off sport earnings.

I would think that Rachael Blackmore earned more than her male colleagues at Cheltenham the week before last. I would also think that on the Flat, Hollie Doyle has out-earned most of her male colleagues with 100+ wins in each of the last two calendar years.

One sport I really would like to see women break through in is snooker. There is no reason why women can't compete on equal terms and they would automatically get the same prize money for winning tournaments. The thing that has held them back previously is lack of opportunity. That is slowly changing, and the qualifiers for the World Championships and other major tournaments are now opened up to women. The days of the smoky, sweary billiards and snooker halls are less the breeding ground for young players now - many have practiced on tables purchased by parents or at more inclusive venues. Somewhere out there, I hope that there is a young female player who has her parents' backing and who will break through in the senior game.
