Not sure whether rip is appropriate considering the "sucess" of his invention the AK47
He has gone but his invention will live on for a long time yet

Ah, I just read the name and presumed it was one of the Manchester City defenders that I keep getting mixed up with.

assault rifles don't get much better than his baby, reliable and tough with a great fondness the world over, loved by many, especially throughout the middle east where they are even used to celebrate winning a footy match.

Not really his invention, but a simplified re-worked version of a German rifle the Stg 44,that came out near the end of WW2.

Why is it called the AK47? Is it like WD40 - the 40th attempt at getting water displacement to work properly?

AK stands for Avtomat Kalashnikova in Russian, and the 47 represents the year that that model was finalised. There was an AK46 the previous year, and I think that there have been updates with different year numbers since then. Others may know more.
