after the advice last week, decided to buy my son the elite. Narrowed it down to 2 options Console +Fifa10 + new racing game for £200, or Console + extra controller + Batman + Pure for £170 from Argos (after allowing for £10 voucher). Already got Fifa10 for PS2 and prob not bothered about racing game, so went for the Argos option. Seems great value since a controller is £32, so even if games are crap, console has cost £138.

So, wondering what else the Xbox can do apart from play games, considering there is a 120GB HD:-

Is it also a DVD player

Can it play mp3/CD and output to separate speakers

Can you put movies onto the HD - what software is needed

What else can you do online without the Gold subsciption.

    TIA

can play dvds, but not blu ray

can rip cd's to the hdd, and could possibly output to seperate speakers if you fiddle about

can't rip moves to the hard drive

online, you can stream videos, join parties with friends, have video calls, use facebook/twitter etc and a bit more

    cheers.

was searching the web, and found a post that suggested that you could copy the games to the HD, and play them from there, rather than have the DVD whirring away. Is this correct ? If so, how do they stop you borrowing the game and just copying ? Do you need the original disk in the drive for the console to verify you own it.

This other online stuff, can it be done without having gold membership

    Thanks

you can install games to hdd to improve loading times and prevent use of the disc drive (that's what ive done) but, you need the game in the drive to verify, as you guessed.

you need a gold membership to play games and chat online with friends, also to access the marketplace

    Thanks again

is there any point to the free silver membership. Not too keen on the gold subscription. My son is only 10, so i would only ever want him talking/playing with friends. They tend to like COD, Halo etc, whereas my son likes FIFA etc, so i doubt there would be many games he'd play with friends. Think it may be safer not to let him play online, but wondered if the free silver membership would be any use to me

don't get him cod or halo, too violent IMO... that's unless you really want to get him it. plus, he's going to get some right abuse being 10.. some childish people online.

don't buy him gold yet, no need for him to play online i suppose, but it is up to you after all..
