    Probably didn't pay him off. He probably agreed to have his contract terminated for nothing in order for him to move to Ipswich.

    He had a contract

    and was probably happy to continue with a wage when he obviously was never gonna play again.

    Payed him off less than his wage would amount to over his remaining comtract...probably.
