When asked at a public meeting (and I was there) with Simon Davey whether we would be signing Nyatanga.......the manager at the time Davey started laughing...........he then replied something on the lines of...........'we haven't a chance of signing Nyatanga - he's worth something in the region of £4 million right now and he is still only a kid'.
None, for sure. I really liked Nyatanga at the time he was with us, he did a great job. And if he still has the same base qualities as when he joined us (pace and reading of the game), he's still got the potential to be a really good signing. But he never was a star in the making, as may be judged by his career to date. Was he ever a £4m centre back?
Was carl tiler ever 1.7 million? John stones worth 3 million? Tiler wasn't and only time will tell with stones - lots show potential then drop off
So did I. Well, maybe not the very top, but at 24 I thought he'd be playing for a better team than one that has just been relegated from the Championship.
I'd say that was Davey's biggest strength. He signed some outstanding players for the club, he just couldn't get them to play for him.
He signed some absolute crap as well. Made more bad signings than he did good in my opinion Mattis Van Homoet Johnson Mostto Werling Kozluk Souza Colace El Haimour
He is a left-sided central defender and we need a right-sided one. I did rate him, however. He will be a great catch for Yeovil, especially as their defence will get a right old pounding in the championship.
At the time, he was on the verge of becoming a full international with Wales, he'd had an impressive first season with us, was well under contract at Derby and at the time, they were prepared to give him a go in the premier league in what turned out to be a completely disastrous season. I wouldn't say £4 million, but I reckon Derby would have turned down quite a few decent offers for him.
Colace was quality, Player Of The Year as voted for by the fans. Who doesn't sign some **** along the way?! I'd argue that Kozluk, Werling, Van Homoet and Souza weren't dreadful either. Look at the players he brought in... Steele Foster Anderson Ferenzci Bogdanovic Jamal Campbell Ryce Muller Moore Macken
El Haimour was a board signing. They got a recommendation from someone and thought he was worth a punt. Taught them to leave it to the manager apparently. Not sure I agree with Werling on that list. Don't forget how hard he could kick a ball!
Must admit, I thought Werling was a good player. Saw him have a blinder at Sarfampton and was a bit p**sed off when he left us.
