Goes to Chessy and Alex Neil in advanced talks with Sunderland. Would have taken ether over our last two appointments..
I would have been all over Alex Neil. Paul Cook is a League 1 manager and would have been class for next season.
Paul Cook, Alex Neil, Grant McCann, Gary Monk, Nigel Adkins, Simon Grayson, even bloody Lee Johnson now. All were available or are now, all would be affordable. Warnock or McCarthy might have cost a little more. All of those would have been light years in front of what we ended up with. And all or most are out of work - in Cook’s case he’s taken a job in non-league. There is no excuse for the sorry mess we are in. There is no excuse for thinking Poya Asbaghi was the right person to turn around a flagging season in a league as tough as the championship. Or more likely there is no excuse for appointing him knowing full well he wasn’t the right profile
Not sure why folk would think we would go for a British manager when the last seven (permanent) have been from Europe?
I still think James Cryne is heavily involved in recruitment of Head Coaches. They must take it in turns having final say on our Head Coaches. Morais was PMG. Stendel was Cryne. Struber was PMG. Val was was Cryne. Schopp was Conway and Asbaghi was Cryne. I've no evidence other than Struber, Stendel and Asbaghi were all names that had previously been touted. James Cryne as instrumental in data and not liking appointing Head Coaches off the merry go round. I think he's as much to blame for the left field appointments as Conway and Co.
Cook didn’t do too well at Ipswich, but to be fair to him Ipswich have been a toxic club now for a few years so not many would’ve been able to do great things there. Still a magnificent appointment for Chesterfield though especially with them still being non league and Cook having past success at Chesterfield. Alex Neil is someone I thought we should’ve looked at, still relatively young for a manager but with a lot of experience and a promotion to the Premier League to his credit. Yeah he probably did an average job at Preston, but they never looked like going down, just comfortably mid table and I’m sure we’d all kill for that right now!
Alex Neil was dour as dishwater. During our Play-Off Semi-Final he was in the studio and did everything he could to distance himself from the club. He's been interviewed and asked about his time here and he openly states he has no affinity for the club it's just somewhere he happened to play.
Fair play, but I’m not sure why any of that matters when it comes to his credentials as a manager/head coach. He has a decent record as a manager and has coached at Championship level for a few years with also a season in the Premier League, not that it was particularly brilliant but do Norwich ever do well in the Prem? But yeah I’d take someone like him over Schopp and Asbaghi any day of the week.
Alex Neil's contract was considerably over £1m a year at Preston. Heard from contacts in the North East he's taking a pay cut to join Sunderland but is still £750k a year. Adds a bit of perspective to what some of these managers might demand.
