Tried to install I.E. 7 and do some Uni work last night. PC crashed and I can't recover all my data.

Are there any free recovery programmes available that can help, or anything cheap?
(Or has anyone got a programme that I could have a copy of)

I've no back up for my Uni work.

    Thanks.

    What kind of data?

What apps? Word docs and stuff should auto-recover when you open the app but you can open the auto-saved versions manually (look in Tools -> Options -> File Locations -> AutoRecover files to see where they are stored, generally in c:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word). Or is the actual data on the disk corrupt?

    What have you lost?

data files should still be on the disk - installing ie or your PC crashing shouldnt lose those - only perhaps your latest edits

I think he's gone back to bed

Typical student. Obviously wasn't that important.

    "first thing"

I overheard a couple of teenage/early 20s girls in the pub the other afternoon, one saying "Are you OK?" and the reply "I'm OK, I'm just tired - I've been up since 7:30". I tried not to laugh, I really did. But I failed.

Just seen this before I disappear

He's due to be at Uni for 9.15, so should have disappeared.

He rang last night to say his pc had crashed as he was having to do some video editing and other work for his course and pc had crashed.

Phoned an hour ago to say he had got it running again but had lost things such as images and flash amongst other things if that means anything to you. Doesn't to me.

Off to hospital now to see trouble, back later.

    Cheers.

We'll get some more info off him later

    Hopefully it's nothing unretrievable.

Send all our love to Laura,

    Neil.

    yeah, soz for the delay...

i installed ie7 as it was pestering me, the computer restarted itself and it's lost the NTLDR and all my documents in its entirity...

tried usin knoppix last night to reclaim it before the option of formatting it (again) to no avail... as i sent in an email previous to the update, i was unable to mount the drive to look in it as it was as dirty as Christina Aguilera...

so i attempted another form of saving it... install XP to my second HDD (i have three, 2 int, 1 ext) which luckily i'm on here with, however... i managed to get through the "strangely" hidden folders (all users/shared users) and finally got into the documents and settings options but nothin... no signs of me ever being on it... my save files for Unreal Tournament were fine but thats irrellevant...

needless to say i went to uni today and spoke with my tutor and apparently the university doesn't accept the computer's bust as an excuse unless you can prove it... lol for me when i told him that'd be fine and i'd fetch it in.

however one week to go for 3 essays, 2 done with adjustments to add and 1 half done and a flash assignment due in on thurs and what do you know my pc goes tits up thanks to microshaft yet again... still i still say no to apple cos i like my multibuttoned mouse.

    Or this?

Better still, if your PC's working OK then don't fiddle with it when you've got work due. Although I recognise it's probably a bit late for that advice.

I'd definitely try the welsh thing. What have you got to lose?

I realise I'm being almost as much help as TFP here, for which I can only apologise.
