I know there are some computer boffins on here so hopefully someone could kindly give me a bit of advice.

I want to use a laptop that I have not used for a long time. However I have forgotton the administrator password and I only have access to the guest account. Is there anyway that I can unlock the administrator account? Cheers.

Yes but this is not the answer you want ...

I've done this on XP, but forgotton how. A quick google should show you how. I seem to remember booting up with a special boot disk, writing down a string of numbers, putting it in a web site which converted it to the actual password file. ... so basically, it is possible. sorry i can't help with how.

aye there seems to be stuff on google but I don't know what to trust and what is the proper way of doing it and if there any potential pitfalls. Thanks for your info though.

    Download this

Write it to CD and then boot your system with this in the drive. You get a menu with a deal of neat little things including one that will show you the password and also allow you to change it. .............. viola.

    Jax

I have downloaded the thing you directed me to and put it into the other laptop and rebooted. However it just goes to the normal logon page. Is there something I need to do? Thanks.

    RE: Jax

If you have written the boot disk you need to have the cd in the computer when you boot, if your not getting a prompt to boot from cd press any key then you need to make it boot to the cd either by going into the BIOS and altering the boot sequence so that cd is first or you can try pressing whichever of the F keys is used by yout laptop makers to give you a choice of boot devices, many use F12.,

I suppose this prompts the question

Is there any point password protecting a laptop if it is so easy to bypass this security?
