I did playing for Southend away , last game of season , we had a mathematical chance of getting in the play offs and lost 3-1 I think . Gridelet threw his shirt into the crowd , the Southend supporter who caught it threw it back at him , he saw the funny side . Quite a few Reds in the home end that game

Odd analogy, but I agree, mate. I’m not going to diss the music, because, as a player, I think there’s a lot more to it, than just Phil. When I see the Ed Sullivan show curtain rise on the Ronettes, it still takes my breath away, as it did when I was 13...
He was clearly mentally ill, from childhood, likely. I’m not defending him, the bloke was a ****. & I’m certainly not saying RIP, Phil, because I hope he doesn’t.
Can we separate the art from the maker? I don’t know. That argument goes back to Caravaggio & beyond. None of us are angels. It’s not for me to say, but Ronnie posted this on her Facebook..

It’s a sad day for music and a sad day for me.

When I was working with Phil Spector, watching him create in the recording studio, I knew I was working with the very best. He was in complete control, directing everyone. So much to love about those days.

Meeting him and falling in love was like a fairytale.

The magical music we were able to make together, was inspired by our love. I loved him madly, and gave my heart and soul to him.

As I said many times while he was alive, he was a brilliant producer, but a lousy husband.

Unfortunately Phil was not able to live and function outside of the recording studio.

Darkness set in, many lives were damaged.

I still smile whenever I hear the music we made together, and always will. The music will be forever

Fair enough, Paul. But I stand by what I've written and just because none of us are angels doesn't mean we're also abusers and killers, either.

 

You’re absolutely right, Kev. & I’m glad you answered as you did, because that was the purpose of the post.
It’s right that Gary Glitter, Saville & the like have been erased from immediate consciousness. But we can’t turn off the Spector music. There are too many other artists involved, who deserve to be heard, respected & allowed to make a living in old age. Perhaps, that’s why Ronnie was so gentle with her ‘commemoration’? I don’t know.
Whatever Phil was, the music continues to inspire & entertain. Should that be denied? I remember rooting through my parent’s singles collection as a kid & playing them on an old Dansette, looking for the band through the back valve cooler grill.x records they had bought & listened to together, before getting us kids. I remember finding Da Doo Ron Ron & it blew my mind at 9 years old. & Leader of the Pack by Shangri Las, with a motorbike.?!! same drummer, I think. The legendary Hal Blaike..x
I’m thinking of the time the Beatles first went to America, classic footage. Phoning Murray the K’s radio show saying/ “Don’t play us, play the Ronnettes.!!” And, like me, years later, they weren’t thinking about Phil Spector. More, which Ronnette would you would cop off with first.? That one looks a bit shy George, she’s yours.. x
