Anyone have any idea what similarities there are between the Freudian psychanalytical and biological approaches to personality?

It's essay time and once again I'm struggling...oh I love uni work. Got a (very) poor mark last essay so I need to do well this time!

I've got a psychology degree and a Ph.D (no, really) and I can't remember a damn thing. Better get those text books back out.
If you want to know about Baddeley's working memory model though, I'm your man!

I'll remember that if it ever comes up! It's just Freud and Eysenck at the moment though. Oh out of interest did you find your psych degree helped afterwards? (and did you do well?)

Well, it helped in that I'm a psychology researcher now, and will hopefully get a lectureship in a year or so. It didn't help in that the pay isn't too hot. Depends what you want to do afterwards.

    Ahh right

    Just wondering really.

To be honest almost from day 1 I've thought psychology wasn't for me (at Uni level anyway - loved it at A-level), so I'm thinking a psych career won't be for me.

It's just not something I'm interested enough in across the course. There's modules that I really enjoy, but there's more that I just don't. I think the fact I've not enjoyed it has affected my performance in some ways.

Anyway...less of my essay style responses!

Football! Yooooooou reds!!! etc etc etc

Well, you can always specialize in certain areas, there is a lot of psychology that I don't give two figs about, but its also useful as a general degree, to use as a platform for something completely different.

if you want to read an excellent paper, check out allen, r.j., baddeley., a.d., & hitch, g.j. 2006. Journal of experimental psychology; general.
well, its not particularly exciting, but its my first 1st authorship, so therefore its great.

    and, yep, you reds!

Dunno if it helps, but my mum has a BA in psychology & sociology and she now works for the Church of Scotland caring for seriously mental and disabled children.

She did come across stumbling blocks when applying for positions because although she had the degree, she didn't have any experience. Her uni mates came across similar and some took up voluntary work in order to gain the experience required.
