All last week I was reading the post on here dreading what would happen when the team lost again. Boom to Bust. Sadly neither is true. The team is nowhere near as good as the team that last got promoted out of this division. That team contained a number of players who were already good enough to play in the higher division. McCarthy, Evans, Banks, Glavin, Aylott and Parker were all good enough for the higher level. How many player in this team are good enough for the Championship? Andy Ritchie has managed to get an average team into a playoff position and should be congratulated. Instead, I read that his tactics are being questioned. He is vilified for the use of long ball tactics. I have seen this happen at Oakwell too, but does that mean that the team went out to play these tactics. I think not. We have problems in defence that are not obvious from our goals conceded record. The defence generally is slow and both our full backs are especially vulnerable when attacked. As a result, the defence as a whole drops deep and the midfield (particularly both wingers) are sucked back to protect them. As a result, there is no outlet and the ball is hit long to unsupported forwards, and they cannot retain the ball.
The team does not have the players to go to plan B when plan A goes wrong and inconsistency, particularly against teams with good wingers, results. So do not blame Ritchie when things go wrong. He is doing as well as anyone with the tools he has.
