From Independent Palace Website Presented with the option of another year in the reserves and going out on loan last summer by new boss Peter Taylor, 22-year-old Togwell opted to get away from Palace and join Championship new boys Barnsley. Although the season has proved to be a tough one with the Tykes battling against relegation back into League One, Togwell is a regular in the starting line-up at Oakwell and is sure he made the right decision in moving north. "If I had stayed at Palace I wasn't likely to be featuring in the gaffer's plans there, so I made the decision to leave and build my career somewhere else," he told the South London Press. "I'm very pleased with how it's gone on a personal level - I'm still improving and hopefully I'll still get better next year. "It's been my first full season in the Championship as a professional, playing games week in and week out. It's built up my confidence and helped me prove that I'm good enough to play at this level." Having graduated from the Palace Academy, Togwell admits he still keeps an eye out for the Eagles' results and is surprised at how this season has gone for them. "As soon as I left I looked at the fixtures to see when I would be playing them again," he added. "I didn't have to wait too long and I got a good reception from the fans, which is always nice, but as a team we didn't perform. Hopefully we can give a better account of ourselves at the weekend. "They will probably see this campaign as a bit of an underachievement but I'm sure they will be up there next season vying for promotion - it takes time for teams to build after a new manager comes in and signs new players."
I agree mate, never does anything flash, but works so hard for the team. Still young and only going to get better. Young player of season maybe?
Good shout for young player of season, only 22. Forget how young he is. He has had a cracking season, no frills but does the dirty work for the team.
does anyone have an update on jacob burns, it w ould be a brilliant midfield with howard, burns and togwell............................
That would be an awesome midfield. Sam played fantastic today as usual. Mature on the field beyond his young years.
Sam Togwell is at times like having an extra man in midfield with his running and tackling. Pity he has still not quite learnt how to pass a ball like Burns could.
