Defending, OK, average. Didn't have a lot of height in the team, but didn't do too bad considering. Our corners were typical of Barnsley - rubbish. Our free kicks, well, we had Redfearn and Barnard or Thompson in the team - they were spectacular.
That pretty much sums it up. If memory serves me right I can only really remember the Adie Moses goal against Norwich from a corner, I can't think of many more considering how many goals we scored that year.
T'owd flapper Watson in goal. Great shot stopper though. Just like are Luke. Hemsdela woulda hated him
Dont forget Scott Jones! Im hoping to see quite an improvement in terms of our set pieces. Another thing that was shocking under both Hill and Flicker was our throw-ins. Nearly every throw-in we took the full back taking it had no clue as to what he was going to do with it. I remember under Robins almost every throw-in around the box would be launched in, rather than going back to the half way line as we did under Hill/Flicker.
Our throw ins have been $hit as long as I remember, to be fair. Until we got Delap, then of course flicker decided not to use him for throw ins. Then he got injured. 6-8 weeks. Obviously
Definitely average both offensively and defensively on corners but at least organised and acted as a unit. Scott Jones scored a few beauties. Free kicks we had real quality in the team that I missing now though Scotland takes a decent one. Throw ins it's all about movement and I'd expected any side picked by Danny to have decent movement.
Going back to defending set pieces, we played Aston Villa in the FA Cup, January 1995. They bullied us to death. They won the game 2-0, but I think they actually scored 6 or 7. Fortunately, we had a referee with an eagle eye/took pity on us and he ruled a number of goals out for fouls as Villa constantly chucked the ball in to the box. Poor Adie Moses, playing one of his first ever games, if not his debut, was up against John Fashanu. Welcome to professional football Adie. He actually didn't do a bad job, but it was a hell of a baptism. Wolves had done a similar job on us the week before. It had been a chastening experience for all concerned. I think Danny learnt a lot from these two games and I can't remember us being out fought and out muscled many times after that. When Danny eventually got a bit of money, his first signing was Arjan De Zeeuw. A great footballer, but a hell of a physical presence who almost single handedly changed the dynamic of the team. I may be getting completely mixed up, but I think Adie's actual debut was at Middlesbrough the week previously, but that match was abandoned at half time due to a frozen pitch. It should have never started, it was frozen solid. We were 2-1 down at half time, but we were going to win the game. Our lads had all changed in to white trainers and Martin Bullock was just dancing through their defence leaving everyone on their arse. We were going to win by a lot. As it was cancelled, Adie's debut was wiped from the record books. I think that's right, but I could be well mixed up. JLWBL will tell you. To add to that... Danny Wilson gave the referee from the 'boro game poor marks (every manager evaluates the referee) for the whole frozen pitch debacle. The next time he refereed a Barnsley game was away at Wolves later in the season. We'd learnt a lot since the last time we played them and won 6 and drawn 2 of our previous 9 games. We tore them a new arsehole from start to finish, but couldn't get the goal and drew 0-0. Early in the game Danny complained when the ref didn't give us a free kick for a clear foul. The ref's response: "You're getting nothing from me today after the marks you gave me at Middlesbrough." Late in the game Wolves put a ball in to our box, it went over Malcom Shotton's head and was headed on to his back by the Wolves forward. The referee gave handball and awarded a penalty. Danny complained at the decision and the ref sent him off, apparently for swearing at him and striking him. Danny denied both, he clearly didn't strike him. Then followed one of the most amazing passages of football I've ever seen. I can't remember the Wolves player who took the penalty, but it was a good 'un, right in the corner. David Watson saved it. He gave it to Martin Bullock who ran the full length of the pitch, beating at least seven player, got his shot away but the Wolves keeper just tipped it around the post. The atmosphere in the packed Barnsley end for that 5 minutes of penalties, sendings off, penalty saves and amazing runs was just unbelievable. Danny recounted the entire story to the disciplinary panel. They must have believed him because no further action was taken, despite him going public with his side of events. Was the red card rescinded, was the game replayed for being refereed by a bent official? Was it ****. So, er, yeah, set pieces and that.
Was there for that Wolves game - at that point I genuinely believed that BFC could take on the world - now I think we are the weakest shower of feeble f/ckers ever. Come on DJW, work it.
All that sounds just about right, mate. I have to say, these past few weeks you've been on fire with the quality of your posts, especially when taking into account some of the utter tripe we see (usually posted by me). It's a bit like watching Lionel Messi playing for Stocksbridge Park Steels!
Best 0-0 I've ever been to. Did you go to the game at Notts County the previous week? We won 3-1 and Danny scored a rare goal for us, a cracker from the edge of the area. It was only Notts County, but if it had have been Liverpool we would have walked all over them. We were just brilliant. It'd taken Danny about 5 months to turn a relegation side in to one of the best we'd ever seen. He'd got about 13 players, a few kids and his 38 year old coach to work with.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the corners we took under Wilson when Hendrie used to stand on the edge of the six yard box in front of the corner taker, a few yards from the touchline. The ball would be played to him along the ground, Hendrie would have a defender tight behind him, but as soon as te ball came to him he'd flick it towards the touchline, turn the defender and either get a shot or cross off. He did this numerous times and I am sure we got at least one goal from it. Eventually opposition defences became wise to it though.
No - I went the previous season under Anderson - a tenner to get in in 1994 I **** you not, when we lost 2 or 3 one, but we absolutely mullered them. Redfearn scored an absolute screamer that somehow got chalked off for offside - think the linesman was in a parallel dimension. Football just seemed much more fun then.
Not in the promotion season but in the couple of years running up to it Steve Davis was always good for four or five a season from set pieces if I remember correctly?
Re: "and his 38 year old coach to work with" I say just one thing about the set pieces.....can they actually be any worse than the **** we are delivered currently?
Thats some tangent! Loved it though - if i only can remember half the stuff you have forgotten about BFC!
