Over the last ten years, six Barnsley managers have failed to survive 12 months in charge of the club but on Saturday Simon Davey celebrated his first anniversary at Oakwell with a 3-2 victory over league leaders Watford. That impressive win against the high-flying Hornets lifted the Tykes to seventh place, just five points off an automatic promotion spot, but, as givemefootball's Mark Shail found out, Davey is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

QYOU MUST HAVE BEEN DELIGHTED WITH THE WIN AT THE WEEKEND?
AYes, it was a fantastic game but even if we'd have come away losing I would still have said it was a credit to the Championship. Our defending was magnificent and even though we lost a two-goal lead our back four stood strong against a fierce onslaught. Watford even finished the game with five or six forward players but our passion got us through

QTO BEAT A TEAM LIKE WATFORD MUST HAVE BEEN VERY SATISFYING?
AIt was a credit to the lads that they kept believing they could win the game and we certainly had the chances in the second half to make it more comfortable. But they were unlucky in the dying seconds – I thought it was a penalty for them. It wasn't given and we got the rub of the green but perhaps our efforts deserved that bit of luck.

QYOU MUST NOW BE STARTING TO LOOK UP THE LEAGUE TABLE RATHER THAN DOWN?
AThe target is the same as it has always been. We want to get to the 40 or 50-point mark first. We know what we can do and we know where we want to be. We have just to be realistic. We managed to stave off relegation last season and we're keeping our feet on the ground.

QBUT YOU'RE CERTAINLY PROVING THE BOOKIES WRONG SO FAR?
AWe were candidates to go down. I think we were the bookies' no.1 for relegation. We're proving people wrong at the moment. I always felt that we had improved compared to last season and I'm happy with the way things are going. At the moment we are showing that we are a side no-one can take for granted.

QHAVE YOU SET A POINTS TARGET THIS SEASON?
ANo, last season we got to 50 points and made sure we didnt get relegated with two games to go. That's got to be our first port of call, to ensure we get to that stage again. Whether we do it in May or April or January, as soon as we can do that we can reassess. I'd be happy to do better than last season, when we finished fifth bottom. If we can do that we will have improved as a squad and a club. We are up against teams with parachute payments from the Premier League and it's always going to be difficult competing against big clubs. I've never said that we were capable of pushing towards the play-offs this season. I just want to be more competitive and see where that takes us.

QYOU MUST BE AWARE THAT YOUR SUCCESS AT BARNSLEY HAS LED TO YOUR NAME BEING LINKED WITH A NUMBER OF MANAGERIAL VACANCIES?
AThe board and the club have been fantastic to me. There was no way I was going to leave. We've had 15 new players come in over the summer and I want to make sure I stay with them.
