Got a 'smart' blu-ray player (actually, not so smart), but it it doesn't have built in wifi. It does have a USB port, but from what I've read on the internet there's no point buying a usb dongle as the player won't recognise it. It has a LAN terminal on the back, but as my blu-ray player is in the living room and the wireless router lives upstairs, it's not much use, unless I run a cable all the way down stairs, which I don't plan on doing. What I want is something that will pick up the wireless signal which also has a LAN terminal on it so I can run an Ethernet cable between that and the blu-ray player. Does such a thing exist? If so, what's it called and where can I get one from? Preferably for no more than £2.50. Why did I buy a 'smart' blu-ray player without wifi? I didn't, I got it for nowt.
Couldn't you get a pair of homeplugs (those things that carry Ethernet over the mains) and connect one at the router end and the other at the Blu-ray player end?
Sorry, stupid question, they're called homeplugs, you already said that. I thought you meant plugs for the home, instead of those other foreign plugs you can get.
Er, "homeplugs". http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/buying-a...-powerline-networking-adaptors-buying-advice/ I use them to get my music streaming out to the garage. They're brilliant.
Get some of these mate: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=homeplug+powerline&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=23546533832&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1117623871347992836&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_79adl2qphg_b Not sure how they work, some sort of witchcraft, but they do work very well
'kin 'ell. They're expensive. Good to see some retailers sell them in packs of one. That'll be useful.
Actually, once you've got the router end into the mains then you might just want to add one "client" . . . Anyway, you can pick them up cheaper if you shop around. Probably not less than about £15 though. But it is a wired connection and it's pretty reliable. I stick one on the end of the extension lead and bung an old laptop running Ubuntu on the end of it so I can listen while I'm out gardening . . . did I say, I think they're brilliant.
Cheers both. Now to spend the rest of the week finding them at the cheapest price possible. Why have something that works well when you can have something that costs little.
Just a note that if you're short on sockets then they do a version where you can plug something into the back of them (like these at £20 from currys) I tend to find them better because, well whats the point in losing a socket when you can buy one for the same price (if not cheaper) which allows you to use the socked just the same. Plug the adapter into your socket and the bluray player into the adapter. The other one into the socket and the router into it. No sockets lost and lots of signal around the home.
No need to pay more than £20 or so, don't worry about the speeds, even the slowest ones are more than fast enough. I don't think £20 is a bad price, far more reliable and faster than a wireless connection, and a lot better than faffing around trying to run and conceal a cable all the way to the router. I had a similar issue as the broadband was wired in upstairs for some reason, the plugs I use actually came free with a BT Vision box I got ages ago.
They've a big selection at pcworld, these are ok and a good price as they are pass through which are normally dearer, 200mbps is plenty for a blu ray player http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/netwo...-mbps-powerline-adapter-kit-16842020-pdt.html
Powerline adapters. I use them, and have done for some years. Very reliable. I got two for £17.50 from Amazon (although that was a deal they were doing). http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-...TF8&qid=1378807133&sr=1-22&keywords=powerline Those are the ones I have, and they've been 100% effective for over two years now. I use them for online gaming.
