My computer has lost my dvd drives and cd rom drives !! When i go into "My computer" then properties and into hardware, there is a list including my 2 drives but there is a yellow exclamation mark against them !! I have tried to re-install the drivers but it just says that the drivers are no newer than the ones currently installed and that it can't find the drives !! Wot do i do ? (banghead) Thanks in advance.
You could try uninstalling the exclamation-marked devices and then restart the machine. That often works.

I tried that. Still no good although the p.c does know they are there when they are rebooted. It just doesn't know where they are !
I've had this happen to me. Close the PC down. Turn it off/remove the plug at the wall. Leave it off for 30 mins. Restart it. They should be back. Something to do with clearing the buffers!
Le Mans usually. They don't often do very well as they tend to trip over their bits when running across the cicuit at the start.
Better still... Do run then 'regedit' That'l do it. Careful mind....... that's one large can o' worms.
RE: Better still... Well..... i went onto a windows help site and apparantly it was caused by be removing some dvd writing software package !! Anyway i did what it said to do in the registry thingy and hey presto my dives are there again.....unfortunately Windows Media Player still can't detect them even though i have ripped a cd that i just placed into the drive. Same happened to me Couldn't get the damn thing to recognise the DVD & CD drive, tried updating drivers and every other thing. Ended up reinstalling from the original discs - only thing that worked - fine ever since.
Just a couple of thoughts... 1. are you on windows xp? 2. when you are in system/hardware where the yellow wotsits are, is there a + in a box to the left of the cd rom description, if so by clicking on it does it open up the 2 drives you're on about? 3. by right clicking on each one does it say as one of the options "uninstall"? 4. have you uninstalled? if not then do so. 5. reboot the pc and it should say there's new hardware installed and reinstall them with any drivers required. cd players and the like don't have installation discs so I don't think it will be a problem. 6. this MAY fix the problem. 7. if this dunt work how about doing a system restore to an earlier time when the cd things did work. 8. let us know if you get any joy.
RE: Just a couple of thoughts... It was easy in the end. I just uninstalled them and them re-booted. Hooray !! Thanks everybody.
