Does anyone know what I can download that enables me to play AVI files on my laptop?

Sounds (no pun intended) like you need the codec for it then, also get the latest Windows Media Player from M$ Website.

    Ok, cheers.
I'll get the latest media player. Where would I get this codec thingy from?

Try the latest player first, that seems to play most things. Failing that, Google AVI Codec

I actually think you need XviD Codec from www.xvid.org.
