I don't understand why ALL celebrity Barnsley fans automatically get stick. Michael Parkinson probably deserves it, but Dickie Bird is a regular fan and Ian McMillan is as passionate about The Reds as the rest of us.

I went to school with him

We were in the same year at Wath Grammar School which makes him 51 or 52 years old, I think he's a season ticket holder, and back in 1998 when we were in the Prem he was the Club's Official Poet. He does a show on Radio 4 and writes in one or two newspapers. I've not seen him since we left school, but we have exchanged the occasional email. Does that make me almost famous as well?

    Well maybe not.

    RE: Ian Mcmillan

    Your are missing the point.

People give him stick because as one person on here put it 'he is a pain in the arse' - and not because he is a Barnsley fan. Being a famous Barnsley fan doesn't give you immunity from being critcised for your general demeanour, outlook, personality etc. And that's regardless of whether they go once per season or to all 46 games.

Why is he a pain in the arse?

He's just making a living writing and doing Radio and TV etc. As far as I know he doesn't preach or tell people what to do or say. Give the lad a break.

It makes a nice change from getting someone on who finds it difficult to string 3 words together!

They give him stick because Barnsley folk like nothing better than to pull people down a peg or two. All the better if that person is also a well known supporter of the club, as they somehow interpret this as a suggestion that they consider themselves better fans than the rest of us. Thee with yer airs and graces, tha no better than me owd ****!

RE: Why is he a pain in the arse?

    Again, missing the point.

Of course the guy is free to make his living entirely how he see's fit. No problem with that. The problem is he just loves playing up to the steroetypical, blunt talking, flat capped whippet racing, down to earth Barnsley lad (as per his Pie Eating session on Look North). The media feed him the lines and he gratefully laps them up to earn his dollar.

His Poetry is all totally ironic and not to be mixed up with any sort of real poetic talent. It rarely gets any better or funnier than 'The Cat sat on the mat'. The best analogy I can give is that he is the 'Eddie Edwards' of the poetry world.

A lot of people really think that all Barnsley folk are like that - so next time someone takes the piss out of you for being from Barnsley, look no further than McMillan, Bird etc etc for at least part of the reason why.

    Wrong on so many levels

    Wrong and ignorant.

He's a great guy, a funny man, a helpful gentleman, he's clever, witty and (in my opinion) a writer of wonderful, thoughtful, heartfelt poems and verse.
