..seem to thinkBrian Howard has already left us! </p>

A superb goal from Jamal Campbell-Ryce on his return to Roots Hall last night was enough to earn Barnsley a place in the FA Cup fifth round.

The 24-year-old, who spent last season with the League One side before joining the Tykes in the summer, netted after 22 minutes with a fine 25-yard strike. The Jamaica international cut in from the left flank before arrowing his shot past goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan.

Barnsley dominated the opening stages, with Daniel Nardiello, on loan from QPR, twice going close before Campbell-Ryce's strike. The visitors were then unlucky not to have doubled their lead four minutes later when Flahavan kept out Dennis Souza's close-range header.

Tykes goalkeeper Heinz Muller saved well from Simon Francis and Gary Hooper at the other end, and the German had to be in top form in the second half to foil Southend's pursuit of an equaliser. Heinz saved Tommy Black's rasping 12-yard drive and from the resulting Steven Hammell corner was on hand to keep out Adam Barrett's powerful close-range header.

Substitute Kayode Odejayi nearly put the tie beyond Southend when his shot was blocked before Brian Howard, Lewis Hunt and Peter Clarke spurned late chances for the home side.

Southend: Flahavan; Hunt, Clarke, Barrett, Hammell, Francis, Bailey, McCormack, Gower, Hooper (Barnard 64), Black.

Barnsley: Muller; Van Homoet (Kozluk 61), Foster, Souza, Tininho, Campbell-Ryce, Hassell, Ricketts (Togwell 61), Howard, Nardiello (Odejayi 73), Ferenczi.

    Referee: P Taylor (Hertfordshire)

Maybe they're confused because of the number of his passes that go astray!
