    Chris Brook - Local Football Author Talk

    Local author Chris Brook will talk about the latest book he co-authored with Steven Penny - 'The Totty Cup: A Century of Schools Football in the Don and Dearne area'. The Totty Cup, which celebrated its centenary last year, is the oldest ever primary school football competition. Over the years, many young players who competed in the cup would go on to have amazing professional careers, including George Robledo who won the FA Cup with Newcastle United in 1952.     My school, Highgate Juniors, played in the Totty Cup. Sadly I was never good enough to get in the team, I vaguely remember watching the games one year when we got to the final. I once saw Brian Blessed talk about it on a TV interview, he went to Highgate but several years before me.

    Probably the most famous player to come from Highgate was Peter Kitchen who had a long and successful professional career, starting at Doncaster Rovers. I played against him when Wombwell Highfields were drawn against Highgate in the Clark’s Shield. A competition for teams eliminated from the Totty Cup in the early rounds. We were well aware of the talent of Kitchen. Unfortunately he was a one man team and we beat them 6-1 (I scored 2 - the only time I got on the scoresheet for Highfields). We got to the semi-final of the competition losing to Wath Central after a replay (remember them?). They went on to win the final.
    I am still it touch with a few of the Wath Central team as we ended up at Wath Grammar together.
    Brian Blessed made a good living talking about the Totty Cup and the day his team beat Manchester United.

    I remember John Street School, Wombwell playing in the Totty Cup late 50s early 60s. Wombwell Schools were in the Don and Dearne back then not Barnsley.

    played in totty cup for Brampton Ellis juniors, got knocked out by Wath National. if memory serves me right once you were eliminated you went into the Barlow Sammons?..this would have been early 80's
