Wow, that's actually huge. I wonder if we'll ever get an explanation as to why Tony Harrington didn't at least send the ref to the screen to review our penalty call at Wembley. It still defies belief.

Not at all surprised, they're all "mates" aren't they? I don't understand why cricket has got their review system absolutely spot on (and Rugby), but VAR is pathetic.

Teething problems were to be expected but they've had plenty of time to iron out the very obvious faults by now. The refs explaining the decision during the women's World Cup was a step forward, but not nearly enough.

All decisions explained, only captains talk to refs, VAR limited to two or three reviews per side, per half, plus offside and ball out decisions (objective ones).

    Job done.

Here's the explanation: it was fixed. Hope that helps.

The refs former and current are all too matey to make the correct decisions.

In other words refs are just cheating bstards. But cheat to benefit the top clubs or in this case their mates so nothing will change.

Surely by admitting this, the guy has just totally destroyed the already poor reputation of refereeing. Admitting to cheating and not giving a f**k! Radical reform needed.

What’s the point of VAR then tbh. Again we all know it’s used to dictate things at times. I’m sure had that some challenge happened in our pen box at Wembley it would have been reviewed and also the sending off would have been reviewed had it been a sheff Weds player that did it to make sure it was the correct call.

I never liked or rated him as a referee.I would hope theres an investigation into his behaviour.
I'd like to think Sky will think twice about his new job on Sky Sports .

This is an interesting one and reminds me of a discussion with a work colleague a few weeks ago who insists that it is the overall culture that referees are operating within that is wrong,

We all target the individuals involved at the time of a controversial decision without necessarily considering the pressure they are under and the wider culture that they are operating within.

The solution isn't an easy one but really needs some kind of full reset between how referees, players, coaches and everyone in the game interact.
Tools like VAR should then help complement and validate that everything is aligned correctly and of course look to help achieve the holy grail that everyone wants, which is... consistency.

I’ve never really got into Rugby so I don’t know how easy or complicated it is to police electronically, however I do know that decisions in cricket are pretty much straightforward. The ball either pitches inside the line of the stumps or not, or it clips the bat or it doesn’t. You are run out or not, thus making it easier to monitor with modern technology. The same can be said for tennis. Unfortunately football is imo, far more open to interpretation with handballs, fouls etc. That said there is still much to do to get VAR up to an acceptable level for all who are concerned and interested in the game.

Always said it was rigged. They didn't want to spoil the narrative that plucky Darren Moore and his side came back from 4 nil down to get promoted.

Dean didn’t refer it to the ref cos he’d had enough “grief”? He could have cost a club a fortune by not doing his job properly! It’s not VAR itself that’s at fault, it’s shameful stuff like this that is!

Couldn't agree more. If any other player goes to the ref: yellow.

Now Dean has retired he can spill all the beans he wants and they can't touch him. Wouldn't be surprised if there's more to come.
