Every time we we're linked with a midfielder, on this forum, it was met with a unanimous cry of "we have enough midfielders" now all of a sudden we're inundated with threads claiming Perkins Dawson & Melis just ain't good enough, so why have waited until now to voice your concern, when you had plenty of opportunity to point it out before the season started
We have a good blend of midfielders but it is lacking a little creativity. Our first game was about playing as unit rather than playing our game hopefully we will see more of our attacking game in the weeks to come.
I still think we've got a decent midfield, although claims it was one of the best in the championship were always wide of the mark. Neither Perkins nor Dawson had a good game against Wigan, but to be fair to them both they were overrun as the opposition had an extra body in there. You could blame Flicker for that, but I believe if we'd gone 3-5-2 we would have been murdered down the flanks. Wigan were just better than us, I don't think there was much we could have done. Perkins was much better from the start on Tuesday, while Dawson got better and better as the game went on. They dominated midfield throughout the second half and extra time. Our problem against Scunny was the lack of that bit of extra quality in front of goal, which isn't really the job of Perkins or Dawson. Mellis struggled to get in to the game against Wigan, but the few bits of real quality we produced came from him. On Tuesday night he was poor. It happens. To all players. I think we missed Etuhu against Wigan and it's a real shame that Digby got injured as reports of his performances in pre-season were very encouraging. I don't believe those 5 players have the necessary quality to produce a unit that will fire us to the league title, but I see no reason why they can't help secure us a mid-table finish, if our flair players show more composure in front of goal than they did on Tuesday.
probably a lot to do with folk getting carried away with the achievement of stopping up last season and proclaiming some of the players to be better than what they are, after all aswell as they did do, most of them are the same players that churned out some god awful performances under hill, and it wasn't all down to the then manager
We could do with a midfielder that chips in with his fair amount of goals. Perkins is the engine, Dawson is very similar but will get the odd suspension and Mellis doesn't do enough. Charlton have Jonnie Jackson and we need someone like that. Unfortunately, unless we pick one up from the lower leagues, we won't find one just staying up every season. I'm hoping Jennings can get close to ten this year.
Didnt mellis score about 7 goals last year and around 11 assists?? In a team that hardly scored goals all season I'd say that was ok!
