Preston are keen to name a new manager as soon as possible in the wake of Paul Simpson's sacking, but the Tykes insist they will do everything in their power to keep Davey at Oakwell.

Chairman Gordon Shepherd told the Sheffield Star: "We'd do the honourable thing and inform Simon, of course (if Preston wanted him).

"But I can't see us letting him go. He's under contract."

Davey spent 11 years at Deepdale, firstly as a player before taking charge of the youth set-up.

The 37-year-old replaced Andy Ritchie as Barnsley boss almost exactly 12 months ago and successfully guided the club away from the Championship relegation zone last term.

This season the South Yorkshire side are tenth in the table after 16 games.

So if GS is keen to keep hold of him why is he only on a 'short' contract and as far as I am aware I have seen no new offer forthcoming.
