A friend told me a short while ago that he'd received a spam e-mail from my hotmail account & suspects I've got a virus. I've just run a full system scan using Norton but it only found a tracking cookie.

Obviously I deleted that but I doubt it's solved the problem. Any ideas as to what else I can try?

    Hmm

Found a few more cookies but nothing that looks like it's a problem. Thanks anyway.

Run Spybot search and destroy as well

if those 2 cant find owt, its highly likely you aint got any spyware.
Have you tried any other anti virus?

It could be a virus but I think it is unlikely

More likely a hacked hotmail account.
Use a browser with phishing protection such as Firefox or IE8.
Always use strong passwords - letters of upper and lower case plus numbers.
    Change your Hotmail password immediately.

    One other thing

It could be that the email is just using your hotmail address as the "from" address
If your mate hasnt deleted it see if he can trace where it really came from - The way to do this varies though depending on the mail system used.
In outlook its view > options > internet headers
in some webmails its view full headers

see it the path the mail followed is back to your isp

also as Revvie says change your hotmail password asap

    Password changed

Also sent my mate a message to see if he can find out if it really was from my address.

    The plot thickens

Got a response to my message asking him to try & check the address. He says it wasn't a spam e-mail but a spam MSN message. (dunno)
