Heard a commotion and caught a glimpse of what I think was a Kestrel with a crow in its grasp. WTF! I thought Kestrels were the type of bird to scour rural areas for rabbits, not urban ones for crows. (doh) (doh)
more then likely a sparrow hawk a crows at least twice size of a kestrel.

It's the credit crunch love They're having to downgrade like the rest of us.
Nice choice of bird tho. Wish they'd eat more.

yeah I agree Sparrow hawk seems more likely.
They're also a bit more bish, bash, bosh than a Kestrel.

Eeeh, I wish I had my camera/phone on me at the time Maybe it wasn't a crow and was a black bird instead. Only caught a fleeting glimpse of it so I could have been mistaken. After looking at pics on the net, I'm more convinced it was a Kestrel than a Sparrowhawk. Strange location for it to be hunting, whatever the bird was.
Driving home a couple of months back two kestrels flashed right across my windscreen chasing a pigeon. Although I was driving managed to see one of them had brought it down on the drive of a house I was passing. Quite a spectacular sight seeing it at close quarters. Somewhat brutal though - but I suppose that is nature!
