"...not only did no one not speak the language, they had also seen us as just a bunch of freeloading backpackers"

Surely if he was in France then it was him who didn't speak the language? And it seems to me that they'd got him just about right - a freeloading backpacker.

Indeed. And does he think they speak French everywhere between Calais and India? 'cos if so then I think he might be in for a shock next year too.

"hoped to rely on the kindness of strangers for food and lodging."

"But, because he could not speak French, people thought he was free-loading"

What else does he want to call it then?!

And wouldn't it be easier to learn French whilst walking in France rather than around the coast of England?

    A language immersion program

Should have been immersed in the channel if you ask me.

I don't think it was his inability to speak French that made people think he was free-loading. I do speak French and I couldn't explain it either.

The great thing is that these people are trying to teach us a lesson about how stupid we are to rely on money, etc. It really is pathetic.

If you are going to try a project like that, where you don't need money and you get food given, then surely the way you do it is by bartering and doing some work in exchange for a meal and a bed for the night.
