This is all I've been able to discover so far.

"Emos are basically sulky teenagers.
The word “emo” is an abbreviation of “emotional” and the label is an attempt to make teenage torpor seem important and deep.
The music is an ugly din that gives expression to alienation and woe. (The inexplicably-revered Nirvana have a lot to answer for.)
They’re a bit like Goths in our day, i.e. horrible clothes and ***** music, a cocktail made even more lethal by being laced with a generous dash of self-pity.
They express their individuality by all dressing the same."

Can anyone make any more sense of it? - WARNING! - No Rod Hull jokes!

Jet black hair
Skin tight white or black jeans
maybe stripy socks
always sulky/crying
boys kiss each other
they cut themselves
band names always have something nice and something awful in the title
e.g. Bullet for my Valentine & Funeral for a Friend
every town/city has a place where they hang out, Barnsleys is in front of the old Panama Joes on the steps, Wakefield is on the Cathedral steps and Leeds is the Corn Exchange Steps.
Just a fad

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.
Funeral for a Friend and Bullet For My Valentine, emo? Not even close.

Try early Jimmy Eat World's mid-90s stuff. That's emo.
