that referring to players in a negative manner as 'the yank' 'yankee' and 'the german' is considered acceptable?
I've long admired your respectful and politically well judged references to our players, managers and humanity in general.
And so you should Actually I worded the original post badly, what I meant was why is it ok to refer to players from white, christian countries in this way (for example whitey mentioned '**** yank' earlier) while doing the same about a player of a mulsim faith or of a black background is seen as disgusting? So I suppose I wasn't asking why it is ok but more why is one ok when the other isnt? Double standards?
It's all about global status and political motivation. I find people referring to Tomesz as 'the Pole' difficult. But if he was Czech and called 'the Czech' it doesn't seem so bad. Both countries are neighbours and have similar modern histories. The German doesn't sit well, but the Belgian feels okay. It's about the observer as well as the observed. Like we could say Yank and it's okay because we rank below them as a world power. Which is also the reason half the world calls the English ****s and gets away with it.
americans are referred to as yanks all over the world, germans as germans or krauts, polish as poles,it happens everywhere not just on bbs,
He's a yank, and he's wánk. You're looking for summat that isn't there. It rhymed. I'm simple like that. You should see what TFP has called him on twitter...
