2 friends of mine have laptops with Vista Home installed. Yesterday they installed a Windows Update from Microsoft, as is usual from time to time. After the update a reboot was necessary.

After the reboot, the laptop made all the right noises, lights came on etc, but the screen was black. Despite leaving it there for hours nothing appeared. Both laptops are now unusable.

Anyone else seen or heard anything about this?

If you can get the laptop’s to do a system restore to a date before you installed the update & then block the update from installing again. :)

    Thanks

Managed to get something by pressing F8 immediately after switch on - this brought up the menu with safe mode etc. On selecting safe mode however the thing appeared to be working, but then the screen still went blank after the boot up.

On the F8 menu there is a "last successful configuration" option - will try that next.

    Update

    Working now!

After shutting down from safe mode, the next time the bloody thing started normally. Safe mode must have sorted something out somehow. Thanks for help.

    RE: Thanks

What you are better-off doing is, back-up you configuration that is running ok.

Then if anything like this happens again. Just go into safe mode then the back-up.

Be very careful on just pressing any button with things like this, it could knack-up your laptop. (hatsoff)
