    Today's argument with an American

    Your biggest problem is guns
    Guns aren't a problem
    Guns kill people
If guns kill people then ban planes. They are built to fly into towers

    And the follow up

Guns are designed to kill. A plane isn't designed to fly into towers.
No a gun is designed to protect.
    How?
    By shooting people.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people

    Guns are just a tool.

The biggest issue with guns in America is the population.

Guns are weapons designed to kill. Why the **** would you want that 'tool'?

Guns do kill people. If I point a gun at someone and fire it. If I aim right they will die. If I point a Kraft Cheese Slice at someone it's unlikely to have the same impact.

Then you don't know how to handle a cheese slice. Deadly in the wrong hands

I guess you could choke someone with one. Or even worse make them eat one.

But you wouldn't do that. I could own a gun and never kill somebody. A gun is safe with responsible ownership; the problem in America is that too many nut-jacks can buy a gun as easily as buying a can of pop and due to the gun laws they can often discharge it with impunity.

A madman with a gun is a lethal combination and it is far easier to do a lot of damage with a gun than with a knife despite the fact that a knife also kills in the wrong hands.

Different being a twisted mentally ill child can't kill 50 people at once with a cheese slice. Come on. You know better than this.

I probably agree with a large percentage of that. Where we probably differ is that I can see no circumstances where you would ' need' to own a gun unless you were a hunter.

In fact my test for anyone wanting to buy a semi automatic weapon would be:

do you want to own one?

If the answer is yes then they should be banned.

I've lived in a couple of countries where gun ownership was common and always felt less not more safe.

You can openly buy an AR-15 in America. Military issue assault rifle. There isn't a person on the planet who can convince me that this is right.

Kinder eggs are banned in the US because of the choking hazards that come with it but they don't ban guns.

I live in Colorado with my American wife and we have seen our fair share of gun violence, we are just a couple of miles away from the cinema when a nut job killed people watching Batman.
Americans are so scared, they think they need a gun to protect themselves, in their homes, in their cars or just doing their shopping.
I brought my wife over to U.K. last year and we were walking around Hyde Park at 2am and we didn't batter an eyelid, over here you can't do this.
Another thing is racial tension, I know its getting some publicity in the UK since Brexit but it's nothing compared to over here. One more thing is when an innocent black person is killed, none of my gun-tooting family and friends post anything on Facebook about it, but when the police officers were gunned down they are posting all over the place, there is no compassion at all from the white race. I believe this will get worse too if Trump gets the White House job. May be its time to move back to Barnsley.
