Preston ale recommendations

Afternoon Tykes,

On Saturday we lock horns again in what should be an interesting game given both team's recent form.

Just a post to warmly invite those of you who are coming across for Saturday's game and like a decent pint of ale or two before/after a game to the two best places in Preston for a beer.

First up is The Guild Ale House on Lancaster Road (PR1 1DD) in the city centre. A micropub over two floors that focuses on great beer and conversation with 6 cask pumps, 6 keg taps and two fridges crammed full of bottled craft ale and European lagers. Currently on the bar are beers from Runaway, Fell, Northern Whisper, Kirkby Lonsdale, Hawkshead, Black Hill and Three Bs breweries with Paulaner Hell and Hefe-Weizen also on draught.

The second location is The Moorbrook on North Road (PR1 1NR). This is the jewel in Preston's ale scene with beers from all over the UK and beyond appearing on the bar via 8 cask pumps and 5 keg taps. Currently on the bar are beers from Vibrant Forest, Brass Castle, Wilde Child, Craft Devil, Deva Craft, Beer Ink, Milestone, Blackjack and Thwaites brewery with Thatchers, Stella 4, Moorbrook (Belgium) Pilsner and Guinness on draught for those not into their ale. In the fridge are Paulaner and Augustiner Hells, Hopf WeiBbier, Old Mout Ciders, Timmermans fruit beer and Peroni Red along with a wide range of wines and spirits.

Food wise The Moorbrook offers freshly made, wood-fired pizzas in a variety of flavours including the 'Northerner' topped with Lancashire cheese, black pudding and caramelised onions. There is also a BBQ grill knocking out burgers and hotdogs. The Moorbrook is approximately 20 minutes walk from Preston station (or a £5 taxi) and 10 minutes from Deepdale. For those in the car/minibus or on the coach there is ample parking to the rear courtesy of a closed B&Q. Other decent hostelries include the wonderfully decorated Robinsons pub The Black Horse on Friargate and The Ale Emporium on Fylde Road who serve between 8-10 cask ales.

One word of warning is not to (as our police liaison team usually advise) visit The Sumners. Though it is only two minutes from the ground it generally rammed pack and a struggle to get served. Beer offerings are also very poor.

How far is ground from station , last time we drove and parked in a old b and q near a few decent pubs , going by train Saturday

 

Deepdale is around 30 minutes walk from the railway station depending on which way you walk with a taxi around £7-8. If you're into your ale then a good way to split your journey up is by starting at the GAH and then walking up to The Moorbrook and heading to the ground from there.

Where did he go on about Robinsons? I suspect you like a nice pint of Fosters anyway.

Leeds Pale is as dull as ditchwater.

 

We are all.entitled to our own opinion and I have no wish to argue with you about this or anything.

Not always into ales with strange things added, but Old Tom is a very nice brew once in a while. Wouldn't drink it every day, but definitely a good one when you fancy a change.

 

I meant the original OT not its recent abominations .

 

I've not tried the original - 8.5% is usually a bit much for me. I liked the Chocolate one, but that's not surprising as I can generally do sweet and milk stouts and ales from time to time. I find they accompany desserts very well. Paired an awesome coconut stout with home made bread and butter pudding the other week. Absolute heaven!

 

Staying in Manchester overnight so will try the guild hall bar and maybe moorbrook again

 

Not a huge fans of Robinsons ale myself. Trooper is fairly decent and Old Tom has it's charm but the rest are all a bit samey and they seem to have ditched their seasonal/occasional range. The Black Horse's saving grace beer wise is 4 of the 8 pumps are now guest ales which sees some fairly decent stuff on sale. Their attempt at 'craft' is Trooper on keg . However it is a spectacular pub with very cosy snug rooms and a beautiful bar area.

 

Oh man you speak my language!!! Guild Ale House had a beautiful Tryst Coconut & Chocolate stout on a few weeks ago and regularly have bottles of Tiny Rebel's marshmallow porter 'Stay Puft'. The Moorbrook currently have 'Star Beer' on by Beer Ink, an attempt at a 'liquid Starbar' which has gone down rather well.
