Now plying his trade for Willem II. Bit bizarre. The Eredivisie can't be up to much. Joe Rothwell will be signing for Heerenveen next.
Until recently it was the highest scoring league in Europe (average goals per game). Above Scotland, but below England, France, German, Spain and Italy. Probably similar level to Belgium and a handful of others on the second tier. 2-3 big teams (Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord), 4-5 a bit below (Twente, AZ Alkmaar, Heerenveen, Utrecht and Vitesse Arnhem) but potential cup winners/Europa League qualifiers and the rest are scrapping to avoid relegation. Saying that, Twente have lost 4 on the trot and are in the relegation places but Steve MacLaren was the last English coach to win a top-flight league with them.
I wouldn't be surprised if, with the exception of top three, the rest of the league is lower end Championship towards League One standard. I suppose they've got the same problem as many others these days - can't compete financially.
Would've been great for us if he knew when to release the ball. Almost burst a blood vessel screaming at him to shoot or lay it off when in a good position whilst he was here but nope, he kept hold of the ball as if his life depended on it. Until he was brushed off it anyway.
When Twente were high up in the league they were doing it by overspending and, what has come to light last year, some shady deals to keep the Dutch FA out of the loop in order to still meet the financial fair play rules. They got very close to losing their football club license.
