Hardest men I've seen at Oakwell been going darn since 1956/7, not in order, Duncan Sharpe, Chris Morgan, Darren Moore, Alan Little, Kenny Burns, Chris O'Grady, Heinz Muller and Darren Sheridan. Mi owd Dad started watching Barnsley around 1930, he always say's Frank Bokas.
Duncan Sharp without a doubt! He was kept in a cage at Oakwell, fed on raw meat and let out on match days.Todays so called hard men are pussies compared to Duncan.
He made a pretty good job of Cummings, the Grimsby full-back, after Cummings' tackle had virtually ended Allan Clarke's career in the reverse fixture. Norm got red for that one.
Just showed the g/f the photo of shotton with my hand over the sponsor's logo on the shirt. Told her he was one of our famous hard nuts. Then took my hand away and she burst out laughing.
Hardest man over all the years I have watched Barnsley was Eddie McMorran. He was the man who broke Derek Dooleys leg at Oakwell I saw that happen, and knew it was because when he went in Dooley had got to go
Big Mick, Gwyn Thomas, Shez, Gerry, Malcolm Shotton, Kenny Burns. They were all hard men but I don't think I could rank them in order of hardness.
To this day, I've still never seen a player hit as hard in a tackle as Mel Sterland, who was no lightweight, when Gerry Taggart took the ball and everything else away at Leeds on the magical evening when we beat them 2-1 in 1990. Sterland just ricocheted off Tags and over the advertisement boards. I think Tags sorted out Vinnie Jones too. What a night.
