I think the early 70's production was in 1973 for the YMCA Operatic which became the Coop Operatics. A great show with cracking performances from Bill as Fagin and Nancy who I think was played by Suzanne Kaye. The local critic pretty much panned everything in the show except the lighting which he said he couldn't fault. For me, Bill nailed the part of Fagin but critic person reckoned he was a pale Ron Moody. Good performance from a good bloke.

I left in 1969 and remember the gent so well, he looked a lot older than he was maybe that was why he had such a good Fagin in him. Mr Gawthorpe was my head of House and class head. Clarry would be doing time if he had pulled the tricks he did pull during that era if it was today. Bob Weston on the other hand was a gentleman and a Scholar. Taken too soon,

His portrayal of Fagin at WHS would have been '69 I think!

Yes I think it was 69-70. I left in 72. As has been said, some cracking teachers. Mr Gawthorpe was one of my teachers, Mr Mitchell for history Bob and Clarry for PE. Does anyone remember Miss Booth, biology teacher who also happened to be Dave Booth's sister ??

Bill was one of my Dad's best mates growing up, they had known each other since they were 3-4, 80 years...he was a top bloke and a great critic of everything except, according to my Dad, Doris Day...RIP Bill

Very sad news I knew him both for his woodwork teaching and involvement in local theatre. As others have said his Fagin was particularly good. As well as he was a friend of my Dad. He will be Sadly missed. RIP

Does anyone know if that's the same Mr Gawthorpe as the one who was head of Priory in the 1990s? My cousin went there and said he was always trying to get the kids to play rugby when they wanted to play football.
