Barnsley to York and back 5 days a week, average 50 mins, can be anything up to 2 hours, hate it, particularly this time of year when its dark going and dark again coming home, jobs ok but would snatch the chance of less money with a shorter journey.
I'm sort of retired now but I have commuted to Stockport, King's Lynn, Chesterfield, York, Leeds, Bradford and Coventry. I've never worked in Nottingham but it's a good hours drive without traffic. It depends where it is in Nottingham I suppose. I'd just do a route check on one of the route services at peak times to check traffic flow and estimated arrival times. When I worked in Stockport I travelled by motor cycle.
Three days a week commute between the bedroom and the office Other two days, it's train to London, stay the night and back next day. Will probably knock that on the head in January and focus 100% of my time on the software business I'm a partner in ( doing a 50-50 split right now between that and consulting). That will mean 100% working from home though. Wasn't too keen on that last time I did it so might have to find a hot desking setup somewhere in York. I've done the commute to Nottingham from Barnsley when I was a fair bit younger and probably the traffic not quite as bad. For a while, I got the train from Barnsley which was ok, but then we got moved out to the Boots Beeston site, so I drove. Wouldnt be arsed with doing that these days though, would never see my daughter during the week. I guess those sort of commutes aren't as bad if you can get the train (and get a seat!) At least you can be productive or sit back and chill out. Think I've lost the appetite for long commutes though. Before I moved to York, I did a few months contract for Fujitsu in Manchester and was driving 3 or 4 days a week to Manchester and back. Have to say, I pretty much hated every second of the commute! (and was one of the main reasons I got out as soon as I could)
There's free parking at work and it makes sense if I need to be at both offices or see clients outside of the office during the course of the day. Darton station is perfect if I'm in London or on a course etc though, only a short walk down Darton Lane.
Probably because train from Darton goes round the houses (Pontefract & Cass) and takes 50+ mins. The train from Barnsley is direct and takes about 35 mins. Although it is cheaper to go from Darton and you can jump off and catch the fast train in Wakefield. But then you run the risk that that train may be full. I live Darton and have been commuting to Leeds 28 Years. I’m fortunate that my hours are flexible and can start 7am, finish 3pm. Miss the rush hour and can be in Leeds in 20mins. Plenty of free street parking at that time if you park slightly out of the centre. 8 mins walk from car to office.
Can only speak for myself, obviously. I just can't see the point in spending a not insignificant amount of time in a car or on a train to get to work, to the point that I would happily earn a fair whack less to cut down a commute. Furthest I have ever worked from Barnsley is Sheffield, and even that commute wore me down. I now work for myself, exclusively from home and (barring the workplace pillocking about etc...)have never been happier(work wise). I get to see my kids grow up and do a job i'm passionate about(and a poor companies employees are saved from my famously hysterical(not) jokes!)
Work on Whitehall Road and quite a few people in the office park in Holbeck, but that's getting clamped down on now with resident permits. I'm in early enough to park on Whitehall Road tother side of inner ring road. Near Euro Car Parts. There's also a few bits of scrap land you can park on down Globe Road if you drop on but that will be lost when they start the Temple Quarter development. https://publicaccess.leeds.gov.uk/o...Details.do?activeTab=map&keyVal=OX6TXOJB0FZ00 http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/exclusive-first-look-at-new-leeds-supertowers-1-8333632
used to commute daily to Warrington from Barnsley....times ranged from 90 mins to 3 hours (each way) ....it wasnt uncommon to do 6 hours driving a day but luckily i could start work when i arrived and leave just after 4, but commuting was just horrendous on the M60/M62! the good thing is i now do the same job but working from home everyday which is a bonus!
3 minutes by car. On the bike this morning I extended it to 45 minutes by going the long way via Dunford Bridge and yesterday ran in taking 25 minutes to do a 3 mile loop. Will probably never commute again but certainly not to Leeds or Sheffield. Live is too short and time too precious.
In my work, I work from home running my agency, but then I have massive journeys touring up & down the UK, and a bit overseas. I'm just ending the travelling bit for 4 months. It's been great, but knackering. If I'm trying to reply to the OP, then yes, worth it, if it's something you enjoy doing when you get there. That way you have enjoyment at two ends of your journey. Only thing that keeps me doing it.
I live in Sheffield and recently moved jobs from the city centre to Wakefield. My new 22 mile commute takes less time than the 7 miles I used to drive. Plus I no longer have to work for a bell end. Result!
My commute was (till last friday) 2.5 miles which I did on my bike. Sadly for me to get another job in IT (which I'm not entirely thrilled about anyway) I'll almost certainly be looking at Leicester, Nottingham or Derby at best (I live in Swadlincote). I'm seriously thinking about a career change (at 61) into almost anything but IT. I quite fancy being a postman with a cycle-delivery route - I can dream.
Used to commute A1, M18, M1 and the Parkway into Sheff - man that was a ballache. When I lived in Sheff i had a 4 mile drive that took 25-30 mins and went through about 30 sets of lights. Now I have a great 25 min back road commute to north Sheff or a 60 min cycle ride when I can be arsed. In short - motorway commuting sucks.
