England's next main Centr e-Back pairing? Mawson providing the solidity for Stones to be a "Ball-Playing" centre back.

Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Mawson? Hmmm, sure 5 went past his defence yesterday against Liverpool. Needs a move away from Swansea first

Not sure about Mawson. I don't think he's much better than a couple of the top centre halves in our league. Stones is world class and will be playing for England for a long time. Can't see the same with Mawson unfortunately.

Stones, McGuire and one other in a 3. Wasn’t sure about McGuire at first but he’s been fantastic since his move to Leicester.

The one other could be Dier or Gomez if he continues to develop

Wouldn't mention them in the same sentence. Stones will be the best centre half this country has seen in a long while now Peps coaching him, pity he has to drop down a class to play for England.

Stones is the heir to Rio Ferdinand, but potentially better. Mawson is a good player. Replacement for Shawcross at Stoke or summat?

I like the back 3 England have played in the past few friendlies.

    Gomez, Stones, Maguire

    Complement each other very well.

I think Gomez has to be playing at centre half for Liverpool this season for him to be starting for England at the World Cup. I can’t see him doing so, particularly as they’ve signed Van Dijk today too.

Stones is the only one I’d be certain of. Maguire possibly.

I still don't get it with Mawson, his body shape and posture have rugby union flanker written all over them. Slow to react and regularly caught ball watching. I'm thinking it must be his goals that are catching people's eye, but if you look at his defensive capabilities, theres no way he's a premiership standard player

Aye I see your point. Keane would be next in line for me.

    Not Maguire.

According to Huddersfield Red, Maguire is the worst player England have had since Carlton Palmer.

Mind you, he did say too that we were to be taken over on a Thursday. And that wasn't right.

Even he’s fell out of favour at his club hasn’t he? Holgate been playing for them as of late.

We’re running running out of decent defenders who play regularly for their clubs haha

Oh yeah, that’s him ruled out then. To be fair, he is a dee dar isn’t he? Should be enough reason to not include him!

I don't follow the Premier league too closely to be honest. He's played the last few for Everton, and after a quick Google, their fans are raving about him again.

Not really, I don't mind Smalling and Jones to be fair, but as you say, we're not blesses with world class defenders.

Ahh right I don’t follow the prem massively either, just do the fantasy football at work. I imagine all the defenders we have mentioned will be on the plane.

Mawson is good, probably decent enough to be rocking in the lower half of the Premier League for the rest of his career, not bad.

His ball watching, failure to mark and inability to read the game haven’t improved since he was here.

Mawson’s basically a weaker version of Stones. He’s the same type of centre back, ball carrying.

As good as Mawson is I think he’s still got a way to go. Maguire & Gomez are better young options & I’d still say Jones, Smalling & maybe Cahill are better current options.

With the way he’s playing Holgate might get there first. Been keeping Keane & Jagielka out of the Everton side
