Mention of Brek Shea on another thread set me thinking how many times have we seen what appeared to be exciting signings in the window who turned out to be total turkeys? Highly subjective, I guess but we'll all have our 'favourites'! I remember thinking all our prayers were answered when we took Garry O'Connor back on a permanent signing. Turned out Birmingham had pulled a right fast one on us! Sheron would be on there for me as well. But if we bring in loan signings, they'd surely all be playing for second place behind Deon Burton? Time for a list?
Frimpong and Mido are the absolute stand out 2. Compared to them Gary O'Conner did quite well for us!
The amount of flack Mike Sheron took and continues to take, to me, is baffling. He was thinking and playing on another level to the majority of the players around him, so much so that when he tried something that didn't come off, it was generally because those around him just couldn't keep up. His touch, vision and reading of the game was top drawer.
Dunno, he played in a pretty talented side. Hignett, Dyer, Shipperley, Barnard. Quality players. I also think Sheron was a very good player, but to blame any of his deficiencies on his team mates is disingenuous. It's not his fault that he wasn't worth the wages we allegedly paid him. If he'd been signed for £250k from Scunthorpe he'd be remembered far more fondly imho.
Good shout about Deon Burton think he openly stated he didn't want to come but had no choice... Suppose you could add lumsden to that list good until he signed full time....but then again suppose we need to cut him some slack he had problems off the field with the drink
He also played with a lot of poor players too. Just out of curiosity, what do people feel his deficiencies were?
Agree with that, didn't realise he took any flak when he was with us. His movement off the ball etc was first class)
Same amount of effort as thiam last saturday. If the ball wasnt to feet, he wasnt interested. Wouldnt chase anything, which when playing with bruce, was shown in stark contrast
That's a load of crap. He was always finding and running into space. Him and Dyer almost kept us up that season.
That's obviously an inherent deficiency then. If you can't alter your game to be effective when you're playing with worse players you can't be all that good. In terms of end product there's no difference between the best player in the world who doesn't score and a donkey who couldn't hit the target from five yards.
You forget one key thing; the opposition. That's all well and good if you're playing against equally poor players, but is completely the opposite against better. You want your inferior players to step up to the plate and get on the same level, not vice versa - what you're inferring is just absurd.
Mike Sheron was one of the worst strikers I have ever seen at Oakwell din't he go around 15 games without a goal at one point he was feckin rubbish.
I'm not inferring or even implying anything. If the players around you aren't good enough to step up then you need to alter how you play to get the most out of them.
Yep biggest dud award has to go to Mido.... With Sheron, maybe just got him at the wrong time, he was excellent for Stoke 2 or 3 years earlier. Although he added more to the side than some strikers we have had.... Walters, Rigters to name a couple... To say Walters went on to forge a good premier league career is astonishing.
There's at least three worse than him have played this season. Do you reckon Thiam will score over 100 league goals in the top two divisions in his career?
Sheron had a special talent , for giving the ball away within 20 yrs of our own goal . If we had paid £250k for him he might have been thought of in a better light
