The real question about who identified using what method and then sanctioned/made the signings made over the last 18 months goes unanswered. The simple fact is Mcburnie apart the recruitment over the last 18 months has been a disaster the squad is much much weaker than the promotion squad and seriously unbalanced despite Millions of pounds being brought into the club during the fire sale. As a Barnsley fan my only request is that whoever was responsible if they are still responsible that responsibilty is removed and given to someone who knows what they are doing before any more signings are made.
I agree that the current squad is weaker than the promotion squad based on the current ability of said squad but I’d question whether the current squad is actually weaker than the promotion squad as it was on the day of promotion considering the vast majority had no Championship experience and several were loanees who were returning to their parent clubs. It’s a close one, no doubt, but I don’t think it’s clear cut.
This assumes that all players need is games/time at this level and they will automatically become good enough I don’t think that that is clear cut either
The thing is though, and we keep going over it between us all. We would have played this season without winnall, Watkins and hourihane whether we sold them last January or they went for nowt last summer. They wanted out. Scowen made noises about staying but we’d have had to double our wage ceiling and Roberts didn’t enter into extension talks after it was supposedly established early doors that the wage demands were miles away from what the club were looking at. I won’t argue that the recruitment could have been better as we seem to have stopped buying other people’s captains and players of the year ie: Yiadom, scowen, hourihane, gus, roberts and winnall. I did however think that our additions in January looked decent as did a few of our buys in the summer at the time. Unfortunately the game isn’t played on paper and equally unfortunately we don’t have someone with the eye of Danny Wilson spotting our future players. Dogger manager, good eye for talent.
What is the point ? Do you want a public flogging ? its absolutely pointless playing the blame game , its gone & we move on , we have new owners & a new coach & you cannot turn the clock back , lets look forward & hope that we get on the right track in the future
Did they want out when they had just earned the club promotion and the club refused to offer new contracts or was it only after they proved themselves in the championship that they decided to leave?
It hasn't gone and we move on if we are still using the same criteria to select players for the head coach and operating under the same restrictions
Surely new owners will bring their own methods of management , recruitment & direction to which they want the club to proceed , it seems we are obsessed with the blame game & someone always has to be hung out to dry. The new owners are not mugs , I feel sure if there is a problem with anything at the club , including recruitment , they will try to address it , business men will pay for expertise & although there might be no short term fix , we have to hope they are in it for the long haul & eventually get things on the right track

We have to learn from it. Who knows if we have. We seemed to have learnt that the method of recruitment is the only game in town - perhaps as is mentioned on this thread even trying to do it with players from a lower starting base than Houriane and Co.
Mansford messed up but not offering new deals prior to us getting promoted he thought we had plenty of time to agree deals however quickly became apparent at the start of the following season that we had no chance of keeping certain players due to the wages on offer.
