Acknowledging that Yiadom and McBurnie will be gone, can anyone say that this squad is within a country mile of the one that got us promoted in 2015-16? It would need serious investment to bring it up to the standard of a promotion challenge. But it has already been flagged up that any investment will be modest (not "crazy"), and that we will "live within our means". To some people this will not matter - they will be perfectly happy to watch us grub away in an inferior league. And good luck to them.
I started watching when we were "grubbing away in inferior leagues". It stayed that way for 21 seasons during which the superior league (by your definition) was a pipedream. You don't know yer born.
The one that was bottom of the league and embarrassed in the FA cup. The clubs lowest point in about 30 years, imagine if Hammill had not turned up? I think a better comparison would have been what if that 15/16 team were thrown into the Championship instead of League 1 where would they be? What's modest investment from multi-billionaire owners?
This month marks 50 years since I first went down to Oakwell, so I think I do. What I do find is that as I get older I have less patience when our self-inflicted actions result in our going back (yet again) to square one. The consequence of that is that we have to revert to watching inferior entertainment, or spend our entertainment dollar elsewhere.
That is the million dollar question Gordon. January suggests a level of investment consistent with that of the previous ownership regime. And the new owners have indicated we will continue to live within our means. Those means will shortly be reduced through relegation to League One, which in Ben Mansford money will cost us £5-6M. Will the level of investment increase as we go on? We shall have to wait and see.
One things for certain is that the new owners want a return for their investment . How is this achieved ? By progressing the club on and off the field , I would suggest that without spending some dosh this is impossible . Can’t hope for a different outcome if you keep doing the same things . Mr Lee/Conway etc will have a medium and long term plan of that I’m certain !
I don’t think it was consistent with the previous ownership, Cryne only spent that amount of money last summer and on Thiam due to the fact we had Stones, Mawson, Hourihane, Robert’s, Winnall money. If all those players had not been sold we would have been back to the 250k-500k spending bracket. The new owners started with a clean slate and their first purchase after only a few weeks in charge was 750k for Moore and this was before they have got their own investments in off the field. This summers going to be interesting regardless of what division we are in.
I stand by every word in the earlier post I made on the thread. It doesn't make me, or any Barnsley fan, happy when we're struggling, even worse if we're relegated. But just because someone sees things different to me with regards to how or when they support our club, doesn't mean that I'll make sneering, condescending, disrespectful comments towards them.
