Sometimes we used to go to spuggy park and have a few cans in the summer inbetween the pubs shutting at 3 and opening at 7 on a saturday back in the olden days. Absolute riff raff dresed in farahs, sambas and pringle jumpers.
Did you ever go to the Mongolian restaurant? I think it is/was called Temunjin. Really good food and excellent value, similar concept to a Fazenda/Favella type place.
I think there are still plenty of places to eat in and around Barnsley. My particular favourites and in no particular order are:- The Wentworth Arms The Stratford Arms Vera’s Darton Balti The Talbot Mumbai Boss The Pledwick Well Inn Lakeside Café That being said, I’m really looking forward to the Glassworks opening later this year as I’m sure we’ll see more decent eateries open in town centre.
I grew up in town, lived on Racecommon road for 24 years. Moved away a few years ago and I wouldn't go back now. When I visit the family it seems to have got worse every time, it's becoming a right sh1thole.
Sadly, I have to echo that. I used to live just off Agnes Road and as a kid there was such a communal feel and people always spoke to each other. My mum moved from there to between Athersley and Carlton a few years ago, partly because of the crime, the littering of ne'erdowells in houses now rented out by landlords and the generally feeling unsafe at night, even in her own home. I must say, there have been a few instances where I've not felt safe, and you're right, each visit, there seems to be further decay or vandalism or dereliction. It's really very sad to see.
