Was having a debate with a few people at work about this. Someone watching a clip of the England team from EURO 96 of the team belting it out. Commented you don't see that kind of passion now. I said that I personally would not sing the national anthem as I have no belief in God and no love of the monarchy. Caused a stir with a few people, wondered if anyone had views on it. I have no problem with anyone else wanting to sing it but don't feel anyone who chooses not to is any less passionate about playing for or representing the country.
Does seem stupid singing for a fictious man to save a woman who's lived her entire life in privilege. That said at least it's short so over quickly.
have to disagree, as Britannia is as it suggests ... is Britain, the British Isles. The other home nations have their own national anthem so why cannot England too, Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory perhaps. When its the Olympics its Team GB so "god save the queen" or Rule Britannia would be apt but when its Ireland, Scotland, Wales or England then it should be an individual anthem. I would not object to "God Save the Queen " being done also at events if a member of the Royal Family was present. But its high time England had its own individual anthem. Maybe have one written, have a competition to select it... "Flower of Scotland" is a very recently written piece ... so why not England.
Always thought England's anthem should be Land of Hope and Glory. Puts a tingle up your spine hearing GSTQ at a packed Wembley though.
But god save the queen IS the national anthem of the British isles, not England, so I stand by what I say (IMO of course). I would have no problem with England using land of hope and glory as it's anthem, in fact I would support it...........
was not arguing that point at all. I was just saying why not have an anthem for England just as the other home countries have. Bur for me rule Britannia is just not it as it encapsulates all the home countries... we need an anthem unique to England.
I know that ..sorry. But the OP... opens up the debate for this do you not think. So having said that then Rule Britannia should be the national anthem of the British Isles on that we kinda agree. But I still keep up my case for an English anthem too.
I like how the cricket team use Jerusalem as the anthem, however, it does mention in England’s green and pleasant land, but it’s then they pick Welsh, Irish and Scottish players
I never sing it or stand for it even at Wemberlee, don't believe in god and dislike the royal family. We should have a brand new anthem about the country and it's people.
England's anthem IS Land of hope and glory (didn't we hear it at the recent Commonwealth games), and I just don't know why our footy team mess about with the queen stuff. Im not religious or a royalist either, so it has zero meaning for me and I will never ever sing it. Although Land of.. has a line about god in it as well which is annoying. I certainly don't care whether sportsmen sing an anthem or not, it surely doesn't mean they are going to perform better does it.
An abridged version of Land of Hope and Glory would be pretty good. I don't mind GSTQ though. With regard to how players sing the anthem, I think that's more to do with a general decrease in passion for playing for the country and representing the country. 20 odd years back most players saw England as the pinnacle of their careers, where as now the international scene seems rather lacklustre. I also think there's less patriotism now across society and if this extends to a much more multinational footballing culture, perhaps that also adds to the story.
l I think it's a great point as in many sports we compete as England not GB so should have something separate like the other home nations do.
I'd prefer Jerusalem as our national anthem but I think whatever it is you should sing it with pride if representing your country.
