https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...ger-14-point-difference-premier-league-season Can we shut the **** up about NEEDING a British manager and belittling the idea of a foreign one? It’s not grounded in truth and the connotations of stating it over and over again are embarrassing.
I think most people just want somebody with British football league experience, doesn't matter where they are from
I don’t really care where the manager comes from as long as he’s good at his job. However, them stats, particularly on the Premier League are meaningless. He’s comparing average points per game when all the top 6 apart from Man Utd have been managed by foreigners for the majority of the Premier League era. The Brits tend to get the **** jobs, obviously there’s the odd exception like Carvalhal taking over at Swansea but generally the likes of Hodgson, Hughes, Pardew, Pulis take over teams really struggling. If the foreigners didn’t have a better record there would be something drastically wrong
They acquire more points across the other three divisions too. Your point may be valid to an extent in the Prem, but it doesn’t explain why it’s that way in the football league. The reason why the above don’t get good jobs is because they’re not as good as foreign counterparts. It’s as simple as that. Moyes got the United job and failed, Rodgers got the Liverpool job and did a decent job.
From the article: " between them Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Spurs were managed by a British or Irish manager for more than half (54.9%) of games from 1992-93 until the end of last season. " This was figures up to the end of the 2015/2016 season, and will be lower now.
I think a big factor with the top 6 is that managers from abroad who come to the premier league already have experience of managing the top clubs in their leagues. Conte comes from managing Juve & the Italian national team & gets another job at Chelsea where the expectation is similar to win major trophies. Moyes comes from Everton where they sell their best players every year & finishing 6th is a great achievement & it’s a completely different expectation to managing Man Utd. The problem is they don’t get the time to adapt, sacked within 9 months & given time I’m confident he’d have done a better job than Van Gaal that followed him. Even in the lower leagues they tend to get the best gigs. Wolves this season for example, Stam got more money than previous Reading managers in the championship, Wagner got more money to spend than any other Huddersfield manager. I can’t really comment on the bottom two leagues as I don’t follow them closely enough but certainly in the top two divisions foreign managers get the best gigs. Moneys the main factor by a mile for me
It's not so much that they prefer foreigners, it's just Guardian journalists think they know more than anyone else and ignore the experts. I mean, look what happened to Simon Ross when he ignored Jason Bourne and tried to make a run for it!!
