    Shows the strength in depth other countries have compared to us. France is a great example with a good half a dozen players not picked who would challenge for a place in our own starting 11.

    I know he was not playing well for Palace at the end of the season , but I think Martinez could regret not
    taking Benteke to the World Cup to play for Belgium.

    The thinking among the German lads in our office here in Berlin are that yes, it's madness, but also that he hasn't performed at all well for the national side and doesn't fit their system. They're more pessimistic about their chances this year than you might think though. They reckon this side doesn't have the grit and mental strength of 2014, particularly in central midfield. On a terrible run of form atm too, albeit in mostly friendlies.

    In his last 12 games for the German national team he’s provided 1 assist and no goals. It’s not hard to see why Jogi Löw has dropped him given the strength and depth they have in their midfield.
