Any skepticism is nothing to do with xenophobia, but suitability for the role. As some say, every appointment is a gamble, but some more so than others. Morais was a disaster, largely due to not being cut out to be a Head Coach and being inexperienced working with players at our level. CHIEN LEE: They got relegated then, Gauthier. What went wrong with Morais? GAUTHIER GANAYE: Well, the bloke just didn't have the experience we needed. He had no idea of what it takes in a relegation battle in that league. Didn't get the backing of the players, didn't stick to an effective system, chopped and changed too much. His communication wasn't great and he never really got the backing of the fans. It backfired. CL: Sounds like a disaster. Who's next then? GG: Well we were thinking a bloke from Germany with less than 30 matches in his managerial career who has never had any involvement in the English game whatsoever. CL: Sounds like another Morais though Gauthier. Has he watched that highlights show with Colin Murray? GG: Probably. I think they get Channel 5 in Hannover. CL: I'm not sure. Really, we should learn from our mista.... oh ****, Nice are on the other line. Gotta go GG, I'll catch you in a bit... GG: What about the new Head Coach? CL: Erm, yeah, whatever. The German guy. Must dash GG, bye. (Line goes dead)
Regardless of where hes from or even if he goes on to win us the champions league. Theres no denying that at this point in time on the back of the last unknown overseas manager we had, the guys lack of employment for last year and the decent more obvious managers available in this country, its a strange appointment if it happens. It seems were trying to complicate the decision and gambling for no reason. Ok, maybe everybody else doesent fancy it and turned us down but that just makes me more worried as to what the hell is going on for folk to do so. After the crap theyve gave us so far, you would have thought a better appointment (if this goes ahead) would have been a priority for many reasons. seems not. For me, worrying times ahead, even more than they are now.
I hope they bring in someone who knows and understands the League,as part of his backroom team,if it is him.I think having someone the team can relate to,helps. It's not just about Coaching ability.
That would be a good idea. Not sure they will but that would be good if they did. A lot of old staff will still be about anyway like Harsley, Hassell etc.
Tbh to most unless it was Big Mick who ever we appointment is not good enough. Have pretty much seen every managers name more or less mentioned and all have been slagged off. Who knows maybe he ls only who interested. We are not a big draw to managers even with the new owners. Barnsley sadly is not appealing compared to more glamourise clubs. Personally I thought Ainsworth would have been good. I am curious to see how a German does. Usually know their stuff, organised and tough. Although not sure our players are cut out for the tough treatment.
Or ... instead of that, just bring in someone who doesn't need his hand holding and can get straight on with it.... Anyone above tea lady at Oakwell ort to pack their bags..
He came over to the country initially as a marketing man for a football club (Wycombe Wanderers) ironically.
Couple of things. Firstly we were never likely to get a manager type, McCarthy, Grayson etc, it’d be a complete change from the clubs strategy if we did. As we’re looking for head coaches we’re much more likely to go abroad as it’s more common for clubs to have head coaches rather than managers on the continent. Secondly, I never felt Morais would work, mainly because he came in mid-season with no experience of managing in England. For me I’ve no problem with getting managers in from abroad but they’re better off coming in in the summer when they get all pre-season to learn about their squad, recruit & learn about the opposition. If Strendel was coming in say in February I’d be very sceptical & thinking its a bad move but he’s got time to work with the squad & possibly add a couple. I’d also guess that his English is a lot better than Morais’ as well given that when I’ve been to Germany a few times many seem to be pretty fluent in English which would be a bonus. Just give him a chance, I will be
