Played in midfield for anyone apart from Barnsley. It's mental when you think about it.

Was anyone at Ewood Park that Tuesday night where Stones played in the holding role for us?
Absolutely ran the first half and Blackburn couldn't cope with us. Dickson Etuhu did him with a shocker just before half time and somehow was only booked for it. Stones went off injured and we ended up losing 2-1.
Baffles me that Everton, City and England have never tried him in that role.

I've been saying that since he played for Penistone Under 7's when I was his first assistant coach! He has so much natural talent he is wasted at centre half and even full back. I see him as a Yaya Toure type player. I'm sure he could do it.

The difference is, these days centre backs are basically midfielders. The way the top teams now play, he's basically in the role you mention.

He could play the Henderson holding role with ease.

Agree he could play that role well. Maybe at the end of his career it could be a good choice, if he loses pace.
I think at the moment teams like Man City, Barca, Real need the sort of footballing CB he is & therefore, other than as an emergency I think he'll stay a CB.

He had played the holding role for Citeh.

Didn’t go well and hasn’t been seen there since.

I do think he could play there but England want to have players who can pass and move into midfield from a back 3.

Hence why Maguire and Walker are playing there over Cahill.
