On a very small black and white Rediffusion tv , the one with the switch on the wall. This time i'd like to watch it on a 42 inch 4k telly with my very own remote. I may partake in a small libation a bit stronger than Ginger Beer out of a stone pot like before. Its coming home,.
Strange how some childhood memories stick and some don’t. I was 6 years old when we won the World Cup and have no recollection of it at all. Yet, I can recall parts from a family holiday in Skegness Butlins the year before.
My parents weren’t even born in time for the 66 final let alone me. Would be a dream to see them do it this time around
I was 12 too. In those days most people rented TVs as they were not very reliable and very expensive. We rented a 'large!!!!??' TV (Think it was 16") but it spent more time being repaired than in the house and you ended up with a temporary replacement 1950s 405 line 10 inch screen monster for days on end. I think we were lucky in that our normal set was up and running during the World Cup (although my dad had a 'plan B' if it wasn't involving a quick drive round to a friends house who had a large set) Sadly Colour broadcasts didn't start until 1967 so we watched in glorious 4:3 in black and white (although I think it was 625 lines rather than 405) Do you remember the clunky switch to change so you could get BBC2 (Wimbledon was great on BBC2 as you could see the ball with 625 lines whereas on BBC1 with 405 lines you could hardly make out the court marking lines let alone the ball)? One clear memory was me seeing the contentious 'was it over the line or not' goal when my dad didn't. The reason I remember it was because a minor domestic broke out as my mum had chosen that moment to walk between the sofa and the TV momentarily blocking my dad's view just as the goal was scored. NO live action replays in those days I don't recall. We DID go to the cinema to see a full colour version of the Wembley final which was released a few weeks later but, of course, it is not quite the same when you know the result. Still red shirts, green pitch and blue sky was something you would not see for a few years on home TVs until colour ones became affordable Our first you had to draw the curtains as the picture was that dim and it was in a massive cabinet with doors that closed over the screen
I was 19 but can remember bugger all about watching it. Minds't you I was more into rugby league then and following Wakefield Trinity. Be nice to see us win it again
I was nearly 19 and watched it on my own in the YMCA. My abiding memory is that there was a widespread consensus of opinion at the time that a huge factor in England’s success was the fact that everyone of their games was played at Wembley even switching the Argentina game from Everton on the pretext there would be a bigger attendance at Wembley.
I can’t remember who was in the house watching it Ron, but you just confirmed you were at the YM. I just have no memory of watching but, at 14, was not an England fan until the final. I wanted Pele’s Brazil to win it at first, until they got bullied out of it by thuggish tacklers. Then I switched to Portugal because I liked Eusebio. When we beat them I then began to think about England. I do remember going to the Odeon though to watch the “Goal” film of the tournament. Football in full technicolour - wow!! I didn’t see a colour telly until the late 70s.
Can't remember it myself but I can remember going to the Worsbrough Bridge miners welfare to watch Goal...great days
I was 14 & watched at my Grandma"s in Plymouth & the watched it again at the Odeon in colour , happy days
I was 7 and I have a hazy memory. I think I saw it. However I do have vivid memories of the 1967 fa cup final between spurs and Chelsea.
I had to watch it in the cinema in Port Harcourt, Eastern Nigeria, five days after the final as I was working out there for a survey company. I knew the score from listening to the BBC World Service and got to hear most of the match through static interference, and other interruptions. The projectionist however got two of the reels mixed up, resulting in us watching the start of the second half before the last 23 minutes of the first half. It was WAWA as we called it. viz. West Africa Wins Again.
I have nothing to add to this thread other than to give my thanks that we have so many old gits posting here. Long may it continue.
I was20 can remember going to Hillsborough to watch Germany v Switzerland with my girlfriends dad(Don Kay). Watched the final on TV.
It was a few weeks before my seventh birthday, but I didn't watch it. The first game I DID see on tv was the 1968 FA Cup Final, when West Bromwich Albion beat Everton 1-0 and Jeff Astle scored. A few weeks later, I saw my first England match when they lost 1-0 to Yugoslavia in the European Championships Semi Final, in Italy. I saw my first Barnsley game in the August.
I was 10 and me, mum and dad, auntie and uncle had just arrived at Mr and Mrs Reedie's house in Scarborough for our one/two weeks holiday. They invited us in to their room to watch the match on an old black and white tv..... about the match, I remember nothing ! Only started watching the reds in 1968
